As St Brendan-Shaw College is a vibrant centre of learning, we understand that a lot of valuable education experiences happen outside of the class room. We are able to access many venues to enrich our students learning across many subject areas.
Examples of minor local excursions are Physical Education sessions at local venues, such as Splash Aquatic Centre, Devonport Recreational Centre, Devonport Tennis Club, Pandemonium, Devonport Bowl and Surf Awareness activities at the Bluff or Coles Beach.
Minor excursion to the Bluff and Coles Beach are also undertaken by many Science and SOSE classes through their Geology or Geography Curriculum, or by Art or Creative Writing students sketching landscapes or seeking inspiration. We also participate in a broad variety of activities off the school grounds, such as T20 Cricket cup (for boys and girls), Futsal, Mountain Biking, Chess, Golf, Equestrian, Surf Lifesaving,Touch Football tournaments and events. Some classes, such as the Ag Science and Business & Marketing class may attend events such as Agfest, or Art students attending the QVMAG in Launceston, NW Regional Gallery in Burnie or Devonport's own Art Gallery. Trips to Hobart on our Year 10 Futures and Pathways week visit University centres, Jane Franklin Hall, the Tasmanian Police Academy and a variety of vocational education venues.
Other excursions or events may occur from time to time as events tour our state, such as the 'Off This Planet' planetarium show, or special historical or scientific displays of interest, such as the 'Da Vinci machines'
Our Outdoor Education, Sport for Boys and Sport for Girls classes are also able to access activities which require a higher level of expertise and risk management. Activities such as waterskiing, canyoning, bush walking, skiing, orienteering and surfing may be offered to these students so they can experience activities they may not have had an opportunity to participate in previously.
