Transition from years 6-8

There is great emphasis on the transition of students from Primary School into Year 7 at St. Brendan-Shaw College. Our school continually strives to ensure all students commencing at our school are given the best start.

Our Year 7 transition commences for Catholic Feeder schools (Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Patrick's (Latrobe) Sacred Heart (Ulverstone) and Our Lady of Mercy (Deloraine) in Year 5. During November Year 5 students and teachers are invited to the College for the day to enjoy a 'taste' of school life at St. Brendan-Shaw College. Students participate in a variety of subject areas and view the many talents of our school community.

Our Year 7 Information and Open evenings usually occur in April. The evening is advertised in the local press. These evenings provide prospective parents and students an opportunity to meet and talk with teaching staff, view current students' work and undertake an extensive tour of our facilities.

An orientation day for studenst who begin Year 7 the following year is held early in December and offers students an opportunity to spend a full school day at the College. Students have the opportunity to meet core teachers and fellow peers, reflect in the College Chapel, participate in a variety of lessons, and enjoy an entertaining concert from the Performing Arts students. Students who the feeder school believe require additional support participate in a number of visits, generally during Term 4, to aid transition.

The first day of Year 7 can be filled with both excitement and apprehension. We endeavour to eliminate any concerns by structuring our first day similar to the orientation day. Year 7 students return to the College before the Year 8-10 students and share this day only with our Year 11 & 12 students. This is a wonderful opportunity for our leaders of the College to assist with transition and become a homeroom buddy and mentor to our Year 7 students. The day is spent with the Year 7 core teachers, who are responsible for teaching Maths, English, Science, Society & History, and Religion. The Year 7 core teachers provides excellent support and stability during this transition. The Year 7 camp which occurs approximately three weeks into the year is another activity we use to help with transition. Students visit Camp Clayton where they interact in a different learning environment and initiate and strengthen new friendships. Prefects and Asussie Sport Leaders from Year 10 assist in the running of the camp.

The Year 7 core program is structured to provide an excellent transition from Primary School into the High School years, and a newly constructed, purpose-built Year 7 centre will be operational from 2015.

The delivery of the Australian Curriculum in Year 7 is via a core teacher structure. As far as is practicable, each core class will have one teacher for Mathematics and Science, and another for English and History. The goal is to have these teachers, specializing in the Sciences or Humanities, also teaching more than one Year 7 Core class, thus maintaining a team structure that provides good pastoral care and consistent delivery of the curriculum.
