SBSC has refurbished the St Brendan Block especially for Year 7 students!
The new building makes the delivery of the curriculum able to occur in a new and modern facility, while continuing our success in enabling an easy and gradual transition to secondary school.
Core subjects are delivered in the area named the "Westcourt Centre", celebrating our link to Edmund Rice Education. There are also collaborative learning spaces and breakout rooms to facilitate modern pedagogy.
My Name is Lucy Withers and I am the Junior School Coordinator at St Brendan-Shaw College. I have been teaching for 14 years and love teaching Science and Maths - in particular Physical Science and General Maths. I have been working in the position of Junior School Coordinator since the start of 2016 and am responsible for many transition activities as well as academic concerns across Years 7-9.
As part of my role, I have the responsibility of organising Year 7 camp held over two nights and three days at Camp Clayton, during 2016. I also have the great pleasure of organising and welcoming Year 6 students from all Feeder Primary Schools to Taster Day held during term 1. This is then followed up a few weeks later with an Information Evening. This Evening is aimed at welcoming new parents (and returning) to the school to meet staff and students and to be able to meet current students. During Term 2 I overlook and conduct interviews for new Year 7's for the following academic year and at the end of the year help organise class lists for Years 7-9.
During the year I am also part of implementing the ILP and IEP's that are written by our Learning Support Team, with teacher within their classrooms. Planning cross curriculum activities is also part of my role. At present I am trying to organise an excursion for Geography and Science classes in Year 8, to learn about landforms and rock types within the North-West region of Tasmania.
I can be found either in the Science staffroom or in the new Westcourt area.

Just as the Westcourt Centre has been designed to facilitate modern pedagogy that supports collaborative learning, the Science Facilities also use similar design principles. All Year 7 Science classes are held in these modern laboratories. Modern facilities are provided in all other specialist areas such as Materials Design and Technology; Food Technology; Music; Dance and Drama. The Nazareth Centre houses first class Physical Education facilities. Most of the specialist facilities are in the same block as the Westcourt Centre.
