St Brendan-Shaw College’s Year 9 students have achieved one of Tasmania’s strongest NAPLAN results for 2025, with the College ranked among the state’s top secondary schools.
Recent media coverage of the 2025 NAPLAN results has highlighted Tasmania’s top-performing schools, using data published by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) on the My School website.
In the list of Tasmanian secondary providers published by The Mercury, St Brendan-Shaw College appears at number 12, with our Year 9 students achieving an average NAPLAN score of 584.2 across reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. This places St Brendan-Shaw College among Tasmania’s top-performing secondary schools and as the highest-ranked Catholic school on the secondary list.
Principal Mr Stuart Ralph said the results reflect the steady work of students and staff over several years.
“These results are a credit to our students, our teachers and the support of families. They speak to the daily, consistent effort that happens in classrooms, not to a single test day,” Mr Ralph said.
“We have been investing in high-impact teaching strategies, building staff expertise in the Science of Learning and working closely with students on clear learning goals. This NAPLAN data is one encouraging sign that this work is bearing fruit.”
Deputy Principal – Teaching and Learning, Mr Gerry Peters, said that while NAPLAN is only one measure, it provides useful feedback on how well the College is supporting core literacy and numeracy.
“NAPLAN gives us another lens on student learning. We use it alongside classroom assessments, student work samples and teacher judgment to understand where students are at and what they need next,” Mr Peters said.
“The strong performance of our Year 9 cohort in 2025 reflects a journey that starts in Year 7 and is supported by every teacher who contributes to building literacy and numeracy across the curriculum.”
St Brendan-Shaw College recognises that NAPLAN is a snapshot at one point in time and only part of the bigger picture. A rich Catholic education also includes faith formation, wellbeing, the arts, vocational pathways, sport and service opportunities that help young people grow in character and confidence.
Catholic Education Tasmania has also celebrated several schools named on ACARA’s national “schools making a difference” list, which recognises above-expected student progress over time. We congratulate our fellow Catholic schools on this recognition.
At St Brendan-Shaw College, our 2025 NAPLAN data tells a complementary story. Our Year 9 cohort has achieved one of the strongest average NAPLAN results in the state, with the College ranked among Tasmania’s top secondary schools and the highest-ranked Catholic secondary school on the table. This reflects the steady, daily work of our students, staff and families.
We congratulate our Year 9 students on their efforts in this year’s NAPLAN program and thank staff and families for the partnership that sits behind these results.
