Welcome to Week 10 of Term 2

SRa

By Mr Stuart Ralph, Principal

As Term 2 concludes, I thank all parents for their unwavering support. Your involvement and encouragement have been invaluable to us. In Term 3, many new students will join us at the College across all year levels.

This week, we conducted our 2026 – Year 7 interviews and enrolled 125 students. The College has already held taster days for our Catholic Feeder Schools and will host students from the Department of Education schools on Monday 28 July (Week 2 of Term 3) for the first of two taster days. The College has a limited number of places for Year 7 in 2026.

I would like to congratulate all of our teachers on an outstanding term and commend them for their commitment to delivering excellent learning outcomes for our students. Over the last three years, our College has embedded Rosenshine's principles of learning as our pedagogical approach to teaching and learning, and we now have 40 teachers trained as high-impact educators.

The four strands of Barak Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction include:

  • Sequencing Concepts and Modelling – presenting new material in small steps
  • Questioning – asking questions and checking for understanding
  • Reviewing Material – going back over material down the track to ensure learning has occurred
  • Stages of Practice – which allow for guided and independent practice by students

Within lessons, staff use the following framework in their teaching practice.

TAPPLE

Additionally, we have successfully transitioned to a new learning management system for staff and students. While this is an ongoing project, I am delighted with our progress on our Connect platform. Change is never easy, and our staff has been remarkably resilient, committed, and professional in their design to improve outcomes for our students.

Celebrating Success

Tomorrow morning, we will gather as a school community to honour students in Years 7-10 who have achieved academic excellence. Students who display our College values daily will also be recognised by their peers and the magnitude of these awards should also be celebrated at home.

We are committed to teaching our students expected behaviours, celebrating moments where students demonstrate positive behaviour inside and outside the classroom, and continually unpacking with our students what it means to be a learner at St Brendan-Shaw College. This includes exploring what respect looks like in their daily interactions and how each of them can be a positive contributor to our College community through participation.

National NAIDOC Week 2025

National NAIDOC Week 2025 runs from 6-13 July and marks 50 years of honouring and elevating Indigenous voices, culture, and resilience.

The 2025 theme is The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy. It celebrates past achievements and the bright future ahead, empowered by our young leaders, our communities' vision, and our ancestors' legacy. Several initiatives will be run in our College to celebrate NAIDOC Week, including our Year 9 Cultural Day and a visit from Mr Scott Darlow today.

Today, our Year 9 students were amazed by Scott's incredible talent for storytelling as an Indigenous man growing up in Australia, combined with his extraordinary talent in the music industry as a performing artist.

I congratulate Mrs Jo-Anne Hoare on her organisation and leadership this week, NAIDOC Week, and throughout the year as First Nations Coordinator.

Chess Tournament

Our chess team came second in the Devonport Interschool Tournament. Congratulations to the team and Ms Imelda Martinez on this outstanding achievement. The team will now head to the semi-finals in Term 4.

The top four players were Norman Smith, Neel Modi, Awasch Shostari and Gavisha Gunarathna, each of whom received a medal.

Sporting Success

We congratulate our Year 7 netballers on their premiership success and commend the Year 8 girls and the 8/9/10 girls’ teams for making it to the grand final.

Our Year 9/10 Boys' football team lost to Marist Regional College on Tuesday afternoon.

I congratulate all students on their outstanding performances and representation of our College. Through participation, many friendships and connections are formed.

Subject Information Evening Years 8-12, 2026 – Save the Date

Please note that our Subject Information Evening for Years 8-12 in 2026 will be held on Wednesday, 6 August. Mr Gerry Peters, Deputy Principal: Teaching & Learning, will circulate more details to families tomorrow.

Reports and Parent-Teacher

Student reports will be available through Connect tomorrow at 3:00 pm. If families have difficulty accessing their parent accounts, please contact the college immediately. This is a reminder that parent-teacher conferences will occur in Week 2 of Term 3 on Wednesday 30 July.

Farewell Exchange Students

Tomorrow we will farewell our two exchange students – Lisa Lind, who has been with us for the last 12 months, and Malo Leboucq, who has been with us for a term. I hope this has been an enriching experience for you both and wish you well as you return home to family.

Mid-Year Break

I wish all families a safe and restful holiday break, especially for those travelling. For those staying home, this provides an opportunity for rest and rejuvenation.

Term 3 starts for all students on Tuesday 22 July.

Yours sincerely

Mr Stuart Ralph
Principal

Thought of the Day

The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy

When you have a dream you have to work hard to achieve that dream. Your dreams when you are young can be the force that keeps you going.
- Evonne Goolagong Cawley

Evonne Goolagong Cawley was the first Australian Indigenous tennis player to compete on the international stage and to win Wimbledon. A trailblazer in every sense, she was one of the world’s top players throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, and went on to inspire future champions like Ash Barty.

While the College has marked NAIDOC Week a little early due to the school holidays, the national celebration officially runs from 6-13 July. NAIDOC Week is a time to amplify Indigenous voices, celebrate remarkable figures like Goolagong, and look ahead to a future led by strength, culture and opportunity.

A Special Report: Celebrating NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to recognise and learn more about the history and culture of Indigenous communities.

NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced back to the Aboriginal rights movement, when on Australia Day 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney to highlight the status and treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Today, it is a week-long celebration held in July that consists of range of traditional and contemporary activities.

NAIDOC Week is an important event that helps build positive relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. It enables a deeper understanding of our differences and similarities and is a great opportunity for all Australians to eliminate bias and discrimination by reflecting and reconciling the wrongs of the past to facilitate hope and build a fairer future. Families are encouraged to join in and support young people in learning the significance of NAIDOC Week.

This Special Report offers suggestions on how families can celebrate NAIDOC Week together. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you, a loved one or the wellbeing of your child, please seek medical or professional help.

We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Autism Resources in the Library

Last week our staff had the opportunity to learn from psychologist Kristine Bull, who shared insights into how students on the autism spectrum experience school and how we can better support their learning and wellbeing.

Our college library has curated a list of non-fiction resources to promote awareness of autism spectrum disorder and celebrate neurodiversity. These resources include educational texts, ClickView videos and websites. Biographies and memoirs also provide real-world insight into the diverse experiences of individuals with autism, helping educators and parents better understand and support children on the spectrum.

Examples include:

SBSC staff and students have 24/7 access to a wide range of ebooks and audiobooks via ePlatform. Part of our Wellness Collection includes a range of practical guides for families and educators - sign in using your SBSC username and password. NAIDOC Week Celebrations

The College has had a fantastic week celebrating NAIDOC Week, with more to come as we head into the final day of Term 2 tomorrow.

Some highlights so far have included vibrant cupcakes at lunchtime inspired by the red, black and yellow of the Aboriginal Flag, the creation of some stunning student artwork, and a powerful Cultural Day experience for our Year 9s. Guest speaker and musician Scott Darlow captivated both students and staff with his message and music, making a lasting impression on everyone involved.

Special Guest: Mao Sensei

Our Japanese classes had a fantastic opportunity this week, welcoming a special visit from Mao Sensei. Students were challenged to put their language skills to the test in fun and interactive ways – a great chance to practise real conversation and build confidence.

As part of the visit, Mao Sensei also introduced a Kendama challenge, which had students competing in the traditional Japanese cup-and-ball game with plenty of laughs and friendly rivalry. To celebrate the Year of the Snake, students also created colourful origami snakes, learning more about Japanese culture and traditions in the process.

It was a wonderful mix of language, culture, and hands-on fun – thank you, Mao Sensei, for an inspiring visit!

Football and Netball Finals

SOk

By Mr Sam O'Keeffe, Sports Coordinator

Football

On Tuesday, the Year 9/10 Boys Football team competed in the NWJFU Semi Final against Marist Regional College in Burnie. Despite a determined effort, and with several key players unavailable, the team fell short of a grand final berth, going down 86–21 in a tough match.

Although the result was not what they had hoped for, the boys should be proud of their efforts throughout the season, earning a well-deserved place in the finals. The team extends their thanks to Mr Brown and Mr van Buuren for their coaching and support across the campaign.

Devon Netball Grand Finals

Over the weekend, three of our St Brendan-Shaw College teams competed in the Devon Netball Grand Finals.

In Division 2, SBSC Green played a hard-fought match against Sheffield. The lead changed hands several times in an intense contest, but despite their determined effort, the girls narrowly lost 42–37 to finish the season as runners-up.

The Division 4 Grand Final was an all-SBSC showdown, with SBSC Light Green facing SBSC Yellow. Played in great spirit, the game was a tight battle from start to finish. After a series of lead changes, SBSC Light Green edged ahead in the final moments to claim a 22–20 win.

We congratulate all our Devon Netball teams on a fantastic season, with every team making the finals. A special thank you to our parents and guardians for their invaluable support through coaching, managing, and caring for our teams each week.
