Principal's News

Welcome to Week 2 of Term 3

SRa

Mr Stuart Ralph, Principal

Good afternoon,

This week, the college hosted Mr Ian Luscombe from Behaveability, an expert in behaviour management and education who worked with staff and students. Ian has extensive experience, including 14 years as a Principal and 28 years working in Learning Enhancement. Ian will continue to work with the College into the future with our Positive Behaviour framework, setting high standards of classroom expectation and managing student behaviour.

This coming Friday, Father Michael Tate will work with our Year 12 students who have just returned from their retreat experience. Rev Prof Michael Tate graduated in Law from the University of Tasmania in 1968 and Theology from Oxford University in 1971. He lectured at the University of Tasmania from 1972-78, being Dean of the Faculty of Law in 1977-78. He was a Senator for Tasmania from 1978-93 and a Federal Minister for Justice from 1987-93. He served as the Ambassador to The Hague and the Holy See from 1993 to 96. He returned to Australia and was ordained in May 2000; he has been a parish priest in the Archdiocese of Hobart since then. He was also an Honorary Professor of Law at the University of Tasmania, where he lectured on International Humanitarian Law.

Father Tate’s talk to our Year 12 students is titled The Poem You Have to Write.

Uniform

Over the last week, I have spent an afternoon at the College exit and bus shelter performing a uniform blitz. Students have responded well when challenged. I want to remind all families that students must have their shirts tucked in and blazers on when arriving and leaving the College.

If you have a daughter at the college, can I please ask you to check the length of your child's skirt? A number of students are rolling the top of their skirt, which makes them appear very short. House Heads will contact the home with any concerns.

Save the Date Dr Andrew Fuller - Monday 9 September

We are delighted to announce that Dr Andrew Fuller, renowned clinical psychologist, family therapist, author, and speaker, will visit our school community on Monday, 9th September. Dr Fuller brings a wealth of experience and expertise, having worked with over 4,000 schools and 500,000 young people across Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and the UK.

Andrew will work with students, staff and parents!

Educational Sessions for Students

Dr Fuller will run tailored educational sessions for our students throughout the day.

Brainology: Your Amazing Brain, for Years 7-10, will focus on understanding and harnessing the brain's incredible power to enhance learning and resilience.

Systems for Succeeding in Senior School – will be provided for our senior students, offering them strategies and systems to excel in their studies and beyond.

Topics Covered in the Parent Session:

  • How parents can help their children to learn
  • Increasing motivation & concentration
  • Ideal learning times
  • Identifying the best (and worst) times for learning
  • Neurochemistry and learning
  • The importance of systems over goals
  • Building upon learning strengths

College Developments

The VET Animal Studies facility is currently under construction, and we hope you will be finished by Week 7 of the term. The new pathway into the Nazareth Gym will also be completed before the Catholic Education Week Mass. This path will allow access directly from James Street near our Chapel into the Nazareth Gym.

NAPLAN

As I reported last week, NAPLAN Individual Student Reports (ISRs) arrived at the College. The ISRs and Parent Brochure will be posted home to parents/guardians. The College does not keep physical copies. However, we can access digital copies via the Government Share Point.

I am incredibly pleased with the data provided to the College for our Year 7 and 9 students, particularly for our Year 9 students, whose relative gain is medium or high and sits around 80%.

Based on 2023 state and national data, our results are very strong; I am incredibly pleased.

Subject Selection

This is a reminder to families that subject selections for 2025 are now due. Our senior school is growing significantly, and I am pleased with the number of external students enrolling in Years 11 and 12.

NSATIS Sport

On Monday evening, the senior boys' and girls' soccer teams and the senior second netball team competed in the NSATIS roster and travelled to Launceston to play St Patrick's College. Both our soccer teams were successful. On Wednesday evening, our soccer teams hosted Launceston Christian School, both having successful wins. Our second netball team played St Patrick's College in their return game, which was played at Leighlands Christian School. Unfortunately, our girls did not win, but our team competed strongly, with many of our girls playing netball for the first time.

We thank the following staff for their contribution to sport. Mr Gavin Hicks, the boy's soccer manager, and Ben Tenaglia, their coach. Mr Michael Allen, coach of the girls' senior soccer team. I also thank Mrs Indea Clark and Mrs Shea Steven for coaching the senior netball team.

It is great to see our students' commitment to college sports. Through participation, students are connected, and we know that through connection, we have successful learners.

Our College swimming team has commenced training on Thursday mornings at Splash. They are training for the NSATIS Swimming Carnival, which will be held on Tuesday 24 August, and the SATIS Swimming Carnival, held on Wednesday 18 September. It was wonderful to see the team enjoying each other's company at breakfast club after training.

This is a reminder to all families that the college runs a breakfast club on Tuesday and Thursday mornings free of charge for the students. It is great to see 50+ students taking this opportunity each morning to have a healthy, nutritious breakfast before engaging in their learning.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Stuart Ralph
Principal

Thought of the Day

A reflection on service

“We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love.”

– St Mother Teresa of Calcutta

This quote by Saint Mother Teresa highlights the idea that everyone can contribute meaningfully through small acts done with great care and love.

This perspective emphasises the importance of intention and heart in our actions, suggesting that the value lies in the love and the dedication we put into simple tasks.

Mother Teresa herself exemplified this through her life's work with the poor, showing that small, loving actions can have a profound impact on the world.

Professional Development with Ian Luscombe

This week we had the privilege of hosting Ian Luscombe from Behaveability, an expert in behaviour management and education.

Ian began his visit with observation and feedback sessions, offering tailored insights and strategies to our staff. He followed this with a comprehensive session for the entire teaching staff that was not only fun and inspiring but also highly practical and informative.

Ian's extensive experience, which includes 28 years in Special Education and 14 years as Principal of Redbank School, NSW, and as a mentor to aspiring and established principals, underpinned his insightful and engaging sessions.

The Positive Behaviour Management session provided actionable strategies for improving communication with students, helping to create a more positive and effective learning environment.

Ian’s insights were beneficial for teachers and teacher assistants of all levels. Some of the topics Ian covered include using connecting language with students, promoting a high level of positives to corrections, and managing our own emotions. His practical, step-by-step methods for dealing with non-compliance, such as proximity, redirection, and relationship building, were particularly valuable.

Our staff left feeling motivated with key takeaways. Ian’s ability to model and demonstrate the strategies he advocates for was particularly impactful, showing us first-hand how effective these techniques can be. Ian’s session was infused with good humour, making the learning experience enjoyable and memorable.

We extend our sincere thanks to Ian for sharing his expertise and inspiring our team. We look forward to having Ian work with us again in the future.

For more information on Ian Luscombe and Behaveability, visit http://www.behaveability.com.a....

Uniform Expectations

This is a reminder to families that blazers are a compulsory part of the college uniform and must be worn to and from the college.

Hoodies are not to be worn under blazers, t-shirts or jumpers. In winter, when ties are required, shirts are to be tucked in. Please also note that skirt lengths are required to be at the mid-thigh level.

We encourage all families and students to review the Uniform Protocol, which can be accessed on the College website.

Burnie City Eisteddfod

By Miss Marlii Forward, Teacher

On Thursday 18 July, the senior dance class competed at the 56th Burnie City Eisteddfod. Performing in the Open Contemporary Group, the girls choreographed and performed a beautiful, moving piece about mental health and the impact of this on individuals, their close friends, and wider social circles.

The girls earned 2nd place on the evening with their beautiful performance, and we can’t wait to watch them perform again, as well as our grade 9/10 dance and drama students for the Devonport Eisteddfod in late August.

Special thanks to Mr Allen, Mrs Winkler and Mrs Healey for watching and supporting the girls on the night!

Sports Update

SOk

By Mr Sam O'Keeffe, Sports Coordinator

NSATIS Sports for term three started this week with our College soccer and netball teams playing two rounds this week.

Soccer

Boys and girls soccer have got off to flying starts with both teams securing two wins this week from two games against St Patricks College and Launceston Christian College.

In the boys' soccer, the team under the guidance of Mr Tenaglia hit the road for their first game, taking on St Patrick's College. Starting the game short-staffed with only 10 players, the boys held off a valiant SPC early until the cavalry arrived just before the end of the first half to give the team a boost. From there, they never looked back, cruising to a 4-1 victory on the road. At home this week, the Saints men took on Launceston Christian School, which was coming off a strong win in their first round and is always a challenging team. Going into the second half the Saints men were down 1-0. However, 3 goals to Baxter Tu and two to Hunter McConnell in the second half secured the win 5-2 for the Saints men, who now go into round 3 undefeated.

Congratulations to Hunter who also scored his first goal as part of the NSATIS soccer team.

The Lady Saints have had an equally good start to their season winning both their games this week. 2024 is the first time the College has been able to field a women's soccer team in the NSATIS program since 2018 and what a great start they have had. With an equal amount of experience and inexperience in the Lady Saints squad led by Mr Allan this season was always going to be an unknown for them. In their first game against SPC the Lady Saints played a great team game for their first time playing together. With fantastic ball movement from Ej Sullivan and Lulu Graham, the Lady Saints claimed their first victory 2-1. In their first home game of the season, the Lady Saints played a tough game against Launceston Christian School with both teams having plenty of opportunity to score. With the game tied at 1-1 thanks to a first-half goal from Ej Sullivan, the second half saw a lot of back and forth in attack. The Lady Saints, who were relentless in attack with Felicity Downward having a great game alongside Lulu Graham in the middle, continued to provide scoring opportunities for their team; with time winding down, Lulu didn’t waste her opportunity to put the Lady Saints in front and slotted the teams second and deciding goal. The girls held on to win the game 2-1.

Netball

Netball has had a challenging start, taking on two of the strongest teams back to back, playing SPC Green and SPC Gold this week. The new-look Lady Saints travelled to St Patrick's College on Monday for their first game of the season. SPC are always a tough side and this was no different, however, the girls continued to improve each quarter with some great plays to give the team plenty of scoring opportunities going down 55-18. They showed significant improvement in their second game of the year against SPC; with Miss Steven there to steer the ship, the Lady Saints kept themselves in the game for all four quarters. With significant improvement on both sides of the ball, the Lady Saints were unable to claim the victory, going down 49-24.

NSATIS Next Week

Next week, the boys' soccer team will play SPC Gold at Valley Road, kicking off at 3.30 pm, and the girls' soccer and netball teams will head up the road to Marist Regional College for their matches.
