Welcome to Week 6 of Term 3

SRa

By Mr Stuart Ralph, Principal

Here at St Brendan-Shaw College we are committed to promoting Positive Behaviour through our school-wide framework. Positive behaviour in children and teenagers is about acting, speaking and responding in ways that help with getting along with others, staying safe and developing well.

When children and teenagers behave in positive ways, it’s good for their wellbeing, relationships with family and friends, learning, health and safety, and confidence.

Warm and loving relationships that include regular positive attention help to lay the foundation for all areas of child and teenage development, including behaviour. Supporting this is the essential relationship between home and school. Raising teens is no easy task, let's face it none of us have all the answers, but I want our families to know that we are here to support them.

The College has purchased a SchoolTV subscription full of great resources for parents, students and staff on a range of valuable topics, such as Bullying, Respectful Relationships, Understanding Adolescence and School Refusal. I encourage all families to save this link, as it is really a wonderful resource for parents.

Families can access SchoolTV by going to: https://sbsc.tas.schooltv.me

Senior Reports and Parent-Teacher Interviews

A reminder to families that Senior Reports (Years 11-12) were made accessible on Tuesday 27 August via SEQTA Engage*. Please note that students in Years 7-10 have already received their interim and mid-year Academic Reports and will not receive reports this time. However, parents/guardians of students in Years 7-10 can book parent-teacher interviews, to be held on Wednesday 4 September, to discuss their child's progress.

Parent-teacher interviews will be held on Wednesday 4 September from 3:30 pm to 8:00 pm. This is the third parent-teacher evening held this year, added to the academic calendar to provide parents/guardians and students with an opportunity to meet and discuss progress at this important time of year for our students as they consolidate their learning. Students are strongly encouraged to attend appointments.

Parent Teacher Online bookings opened on Tuesday 27 August at 3:00 pm; and close on Monday 2 September at 7:00 pm. If you require assistance in making a booking or experience technical issues, please contact the College on (03) 6424 7622.

*The College is aware of a technical issue with some reports and is working to have this rectified quickly. Please contact the College with any concerns.

College Trivia Night – Friday 30 August

Our Senior SRC is holding its annual fundraiser in the Genesis Centre this Friday 30 August, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. All funds raised will go directly to the Warrawee Women’s Shelter, which supports women and children in our community. We thank our community for their enthusiastic support. With all tables booked and very generous donations by local businesses and the community, we are sure to have a great evening in support of this worthy cause.

Moderation Day | Student Free Day

Please note that moderation day on Friday 6 September was originally marked as a student-free day for Years 10-12. However, because the College is moving to a new Learning Management System next year, this will now be a student-free day for all students in Years 7-12 to allow staff to begin training with the new system.

Dr Andrew Fuller – Monday 9 September

We are delighted to be hosting Dr Andrew Fuller, renowned clinical psychologist, family therapist, author, and speaker, who will visit our school community on Monday, 9 September. I urge all families to take this opportunity to listen to such a quality speaker. His experience will benefit parents and our young people. The College extends our appreciation to the Tasmanian Catholic Schools Parents Council for their grant to allow this opportunity.

All are welcome and we encourage you to share this opportunity with friends and colleagues who may wish to attend. Further information is available in the College newsletter and social media.

A reminder to families that you need to register for this event.

RSVP (Google Form): https://sbsc.me/DrAndrewFuller... RSVP by Wednesday, 4 September

We have a large number of families already registered and look forward to seeing you on the night.

Sports

Over the last week the College has continued to see sporting success. Our Senior Girls Soccer team remains undefeated, and our Senior boys team are pushing for a semi final appearance. Our Senior Girls netball team have finished the season off strongly. With many of the girls playing netball for the first time, they drew with Scotch Oakburn College last week and then defeated Launceston Church Grammar here at the College yesterday evening.

On Tuesday, our NSATIS Swimming team travelled to Launceston Aquatic Centre to participate in the NSATIS carnival. The team performed strongly, representing the College with pride.

Our U14 Girls finished 3rd in their pennant and our junior Girls 4th overall. Abbie Tattersall broke the 50m U13 Girls record and Braydee DiNunzio finished third in her race with all three competitors recording times above the previous record!

French Trip

Our 25 French trip students must be getting excited with only 27 days to go! The College is currently investigating trips that will be on offer for our students next year.

Enrolments

The College has a limited number of spaces for Year 7, 2025 available. The taster day for our non Catholic school students is being held on Thursday 26 September. This is the final week of Term 3. Taster days are an important part of the transition process, so I encourage families and friends of the St Brendan-Shaw College community not to miss this opportunity. Students will need to have completed an enrolment application to attend on this day.

Dance Eisteddfod

Congratulations to our Year 9/10 and Senior Dance students who secured first place in the School Group category and 3rd place in the open contemporary group section at the recent Devonport Eisteddfod. I thank Mrs Marlii Forward and Mrs Natalie Healey for supporting the students.

Friday Mass

The College has begun celebrating Mass every Friday morning in our Chapel at 8:15 am to 8:45 am. Families are most welcome to attend.

I would like to thank all families for their ongoing support of the College.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Stuart Ralph
Principal

SchoolTV Special Report: Healthy Study Habits

In the leadup to Year 10 and senior exam periods, it’s timely to examine the topic of healthy study habits. In the following special report, Dr Michael Carr-Gregg explores healthy study habits that are beneficial for all learners.

Healthy Study Habits

In today's world, where distractions are abundant and the pressure to excel is high, guiding children to develop healthy study habits is more important than ever. As students aspire to achieve academic success, the cornerstone of that achievement lies not just in their intelligence or drive, but in the study habits they cultivate.

It's essential for students to recognise that good study habits aren't merely about spending extra hours hitting the books. It's more about quality over quantity and having a more balanced approach. Emphasising the value of a routine is essential. Consistent study times establish a sense of structure and discipline, turning studying into a natural part of their daily routine rather than a burdensome task.

Additionally, how students approach their study sessions is equally important. Taking regular breaks is a crucial part of this process in maintaining focus and preventing burnout.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes sufficient sleep, a balanced diet, and consistent physical activity are indispensable elements that will significantly impact your child's ability to study effectively. Fostering these healthy habits is one of the most valuable gifts we can offer children, paving the way for a lifetime of learning and achievement.

This Special Report will help you support your young person as they embark on studying for exams.

Gran’s Table Service

By Miss Sophie Lansley, Mrs Sue Weslake and Mrs Nona Roberts

The Senior students from both Food and Hospitality Enterprise classes have recently provided meals for those attending Gran's table lunches. This is a sister organisation to Gran's Van, which aims to provide a sit-down meal once a week for those in our community who struggle with food security or wish to have some company on a Saturday lunchtime.

Participation in catering activities like this allows our students the opportunity to work in teams and assist others. Two important qualities for those wishing to be hospitality employees.

More importantly though, such an activity involves our students living out our College Values of Hope and Service. We hope in a small way we provided some enjoyment for those who partook of our prepared meals.

We thank those classes, their teachers Mrs Weslake and Mrs Roberts, and Gran's table volunteers for all their hard work in supporting those in need in our local community. As a College we try to live out the values of our founders, including St Mary of the Cross MacKillop who stated, "never see a need without doing something about it."

Friday Mass with Fr Chatty

We invite our college community—students, staff, and families—to gather for Mass with Fr Chathura Silva every Friday morning.

When: Fridays during the school term
Time: 8:15am start (concludes before homeroom)
Where: College Chapel

Start your Friday with reflection and connection. All are welcome!

Chess Team Update: A Strong Finish Despite the Odds

By 1. College Chess Team & 2. Ms Imelda Martinez, Chess Team PIC

On Thursday 22 August, our school chess team participated at the Interschool Chess Tournament at Don College. Every member of the team gave their best effort, with almost every individual player winning four out of seven games for the day.

We would have loved to have more people from our school to participate at Chess Club. Even if you're not the greatest, you can still come down to the Chess Club on Thursday in Week 1 and practise your chess skills and have fun. We thank Ms Martinez and other staff and students from other schools for participating at the tournament.

By Ms Imelda Martinez, Chess Team PIC

While we didn't make it to the finals this time, our Chess team played exceptionally well, with six students winning four games. The competition was incredibly close, with just one or two wins making the difference in the final round. Don College took the win with 21.5 points, followed by Deloraine HS with 18.5, Latrobe HS with 17.5, and SBSC close behind with 16 points, placing us ahead of two other schools.

What made this performance even more impressive is that our team was largely made up of Year 8 students, stepping up to face older, more experienced, and higher-ranking opponents. With many of our Year 10 players away, this was no easy task, yet our students rose to the challenge with determination and grace.

Jack stood out as the most improved player of the day, showcasing calm and quiet determination. He started strong, winning most of his initial games before facing more seasoned opponents as his ranking climbed. Logan demonstrated assertiveness and attention to detail, even politely correcting a scoring error by the moderator. Oliver brought lively energy to the afternoon rounds, with Norman stepping into a leadership role to keep the team focused.

It was a joy to listen to the students' conversations throughout the day, full of free-spirited enthusiasm.

The students were not only supportive of each other but also extended their camaraderie to players from other schools. They did their best, made new friends, and shared in their collective love for chess.

As this marks our final excursion for the year, I want to thank everyone who has supported the team this year.

Australian History Competition

KAl

By Ms Kelly Allen, Teaching and Learning Leader - Humanities and Social Sciences

Earlier in May, the College had 58 students from across Years 7-10 participate in this year's Australian History Competition. The three major aims of this national competition are to:

Provide a quality resource that demonstrates approaches to the assessment of the skills and understandings required by the Australian Curriculum: History

Provide a vehicle that showcases history as an essential component in the school curriculum.

Foster engagement in the subject of History and reward students’ interest in History.

A range of historical sources and questions are used to focus on testing students' analytical and interpretive skills rather than relying on prior knowledge. For this reason, the competition is accessible to students of all levels and provides a great opportunity for them to engage and excel—and indeed, many did!

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all students who participated and acknowledge those who achieved outstanding results. Well done!

Devonport Eisteddfod

MFo

By Mrs Marlii Forward, Dance Teacher

The Devonport Eisteddfod is in full swing, offering a vibrant celebration of the performing arts and a platform for our students to demonstrate their talents. Last Friday, our dancers showcased their skills across various categories, and we couldn't be more proud of their achievements. Next week is the drama segment, where more of our students will have the opportunity to shine.

Our Year 9/10 girls and senior dance group secured first place in the school group category. The senior girls also received special recognition from the adjudicator, who called them back on stage for some wonderful compliments.

In the open contemporary group section, our seniors took third place with a dance entirely choreographed by one of our talented students, which will feature in her end-of-year exam. Their energy and camaraderie in the hip-hop performance were so electric that it felt like a concert, earning them an honourable mention.

Special congratulations to two of our students who performed solo contemporary pieces. One student, competing in an older age group, placed third with her self-choreographed solo—another fantastic achievement.

We're also thrilled to acknowledge the accomplishments of other students who participated in non-school-based performances over the weekend. A special mention goes to Ruby, who won the prestigious Rebecca Bickerton own choreography section. We look forward to seeing our dancers continue to grow and develop their talents. The Devonport Eisteddfod is just one of many steps on their journey.

We would like to thank the staff who have supported our students in their efforts. In particular, we thank Mrs Marlii Forward and Mrs Natalie Healey.

The Devonport Eisteddfod has been a fantastic showcase. We wish our drama students and Mr Michael Allen the best of luck as they finalise their preparations. We look forward to supporting them next week!

Thanks to our brilliant library staff for hosting and for keeping our students' love for reading alive and well - we can't wait to see what you all dream up for Book Week 2025!

Last week, our Year 12 students had the opportunity to explore their future at the University of Tasmania in Hobart. Over two days, they visited various faculties, toured accommodations like Hytten Hall and stayed at the wonderful Jane Franklin Hall.

The students engaged in hands-on workshops at the Menzies Institute, where they delved into medical, science, and paramedicine fields. They also explored the Hedberg for Music and Performing Arts, participated in a moot court at the Law School, and even designed a marble sorter in the Engineering department to simulate recycling processes.

Thank you to UTAS and Jane Franklin Hall for your warm hospitality and for giving our students a glimpse into their future possibilities.

Minor Change to ATAR Calculation from 2025

The requirements to receive an ATAR in Tasmania are set by the University of Tasmania, as the Tertiary Admissions Centre (TAC) for Tasmania.

The TAC has decided to make a minor change to the ATAR calculation process that will apply from 2025 onwards.

The change will see an ATAR calculated using an eligible student’s best results in Level 3 and 4 courses over two years of senior secondary education (combination of two years from Years 11, 12 or 13). This change removes the requirement for three of the results to be from the final year of study.

More information about the change is available:

      • from the University at www.utas.edu.au/atar, including the factsheet Understanding the changes to the ATAR
      • on the TASC webpage ATAR calculation from 2025, including FAQs on how the change effects current and future students.

      Sports

      NSATIS Sports Update

      SOk

      Mr Sam O'Keeffe, Sports Coordinator

      NSATIS Soccer

Last week both the Boys and Girls NSATIS Soccer teams travelled to Scotch Oakburn for their final away game of the regular season.

The Lady Saints had another great week of soccer downing SOC 4-1 as they secured top spot on the NSATIS Ladder. Lulu Graham got the Lady Saints on the board early with a cracking goal from outside the box, Lulu would follow this up with another goal later in the first half. Chloe Casey was again clinical in the first half as goalie keeping a clean sheet through the first half. The team moved the ball well throughout the second half creating lots of opportunities, Felicity Downward found the back of the net midway through the second half and would go on to claim her second goal in the late stages of the game to secure the 4-1 victory for the Lady Saints and top spot on the NSATIS ladder. The Lady Saints will now turn their attention to LCGS with their final roster game before finals on Monday 2 September here at the College.

The Saints men had a heartbreaking finish to their match-up with SOC going down 4-3. The Saints men were looking to break their losing ways on the road in a must-win game if they were to give themselves a real chance at playing in the Grand Final this season. With emotions high, the Saints men gave themselves plenty of opportunities with Joss Littler showing athletic skills with a scissor kick that was just wide. Both teams continued to go back and forth each looking to find a way to get in front. Unfortunately, the Saints men would go down in another tough match. The team currently sits in 4th position with two must-win games remaining. The Saints men will now turn their attention to 2nd place LCGS on Monday 2 September in a must-win game. They will play their final roster game on Wednesday 4 of September also, against northwest rivals Marist Regional College.

      NSATIS Netball

The Lady Saints netball team had their best game of the season in a 33-33 heart-stopper against Scotch Oakburn College on the road. The team has shown great improvement this season under the guidance of Miss Steven and Mrs Clark. The Lady Saints were quick to score in transition and moved the ball well for four quarters. With time running out, the Saints had a small lead and looked to maintain it. SOC fought hard to stay in the game scoring the last couple of points to finish the game 33-33.

Yesterday the Lady Saints netball team had their final roster game of the season. After a very successful week prior, the team was eager to get a win on the board in their final game. Lucy Aherne and Mia Aylett were exceptional in the first half and found plenty of opportunities to score. Great defence from Taylor Wells and Maggie Broomhall set the platform for the Ladies to take control of the game. At the half, the Saints had a small lead of two points and needed a big third quarter. Going into the final quarter, the teams were tied, and both teams were desperate in defence, intercepting multiple passes. The final quarter was intense as both teams were trying to find a way to keep the lead, and the Lady Saints were able to finish the game victorious with a 37-33 win. The Lady Saints now wait to see what the other results were around the competition with a finals berth on the cards with a little bit of luck.

      NSATIS Swimming

On Tuesday, the College took 25 students to Launceston as part of the NSATIS Swimming team. Many of the team members have been busy training at the Splash Aquatic Centre over the last month, preparing for the carnival. This carnival was one of the most successful in recent years, with many students placing in their races, and a few records were broken. Abbie Tattersall got the team off to a great start, winning her 50m Freestyle and also breaking the short course record at the same time in her first swimming campaign for the College. The previous record was 30.32 seconds and Abbie swam a time of 29.79. Throughout the day the whole team did a great job in all their events, with some great swims also from Braydee DiNunzio and Oscar Lakeland. The Year 8 relay team were also successful in finishing first in their event.

The team would like to thank Coaches Mr Butcher and Ms Ali Pease for their support during the early morning training sessions and during the day. Their assistance during the early morning sessions contributed to the wonderful success of the swimming team on Tuesday. The team was also led well by the lone seniors and Captains Joss Littler and Ellie Ryan. Thank you to Mr Peters and Miss Healey for their support at the carnival. The team now sets its sights on the SATIS Swimming carnival in Hobart on Wednesday 18 September. For those travelling to Hobart, training will continue each Thursday morning from 7.30 am to 8.30 am, with the final session being Thursday 12 September.

      Tennis Adventures in Darwin

      By Matilda Baldock, Year 10

Recently, I participated in a state-wide tennis competition in Darwin, Northern Territory. The four days were filled with fun and fulfilling activities.

On the first day, we had the opening ceremony, which included a speech by Evonne Goolagong and a cultural exchange.

      Matilda in Darwin

On the second day, we defeated one of the Queensland teams! We also met Ash Barty and enjoyed a small concert by Jessica Mauboy. Ash Barty and Evonne Goolagong signed my sunglasses, so now I have the coolest sunnies ever.

The third day was the busiest, with many tennis matches—we played tennis all day. That night, we had a concert by DJ Miller.

The fourth day was the saddest, as it was the closing ceremony. However, we discovered that we came 5th in the entire competition, which is the best we’ve ever done.

On the last day, we had some free time with our supervisors, so we visited a crocodile park and the markets. The crocodile park was a lot of fun, and I even got to hold a baby croc!

      Devonport Bulls U18 Premiers

Well done to the Devonport Bulls on securing the U18 crown last weekend, and kudos to Hutchins for an outstanding season and a strong final performance.

A special mention to our students for contributing to back-to-back grand final wins. Congratulations to Lachlan Nield, Saxon Walker, Logan Beaven-Duncan, Jackson Hayes, and Xander Langley!
