Deputy Principal – Teaching & Learning

Deputy Principal's Message

Mr Gerry Peters – Deputy Principal: Teaching & Learning

By Mr Gerry Peters, Deputy Principal: Teaching & Learning

Welcome to Week 10 of Term 3.

As we reach the end of Term 3, our senior students are entering an important phase of preparation for their final examinations. The focus and steady effort they apply now will serve them well in the weeks ahead.

Next term will begin with a student-free day on Monday, 13 October, allowing staff to participate in professional learning as part of the Insight to Learning initiative.

Please note, however, that Year 11 and 12 pre-tertiary classes will still run on this day to ensure continuity for those preparing for examinations. Students in Years 7–10 will commence on Tuesday, 14 October.

Japan Trip

We extend our best wishes to Mr Ralph, Mr Gleeson, Miss Malone and the students currently travelling on the Japanese Study Tour. Their itinerary includes Tokyo, Kanazawa, Hiroshima, and Kyoto, providing a rich opportunity to deepen their cultural understanding and extend their classroom learning into lived experiences. We look forward to hearing their stories and reflections when they return at the beginning of Term 4.

Trivia Night

Last Friday night’s Trivia Night, supporting Warrawee Women’s Shelter and run by our Student Executive, was a wonderful example of community in action. We extend heartfelt thanks to Mr Daman Peters and Mrs Cheryl Sheehan for supporting the students in creating such a successful event. Special thanks also to the families and community members whose generosity through prizes and accommodation donations helped make the evening such a memorable occasion for such a worthy cause.

Enrolment at the College for 2026

We remind all families that the College requires a 10-school week notice period for students exiting the College (per the enrolment contract). If your child is not returning for 2026, please contact the Enrolment Registrar, Mrs Iola Turner, before the end of term to complete an exit form.

Sport

The Lady Saints made history this year, finishing top of the ladder and claiming the College’s first-ever NSATIS Girls Soccer Championship — the first in school history, earning the right to host the SATIS grand final. Congratulations to the girls on a remarkable season.

We especially thank Year 12 student Sophie Abraham for her contribution in her final year, Mr Allen for his coaching and commitment, and Mr Sam O’Keeffe for his support as Sports Coordinator. The College also extends its gratitude to the Devonport Strikers for their ongoing support and generosity in providing access to their grounds and facilities.

Our netball and boys’ soccer teams showed strong spirit across their seasons, our swimmers achieved excellent results at the SATIS carnival in Hobart, and more than 150 students enjoyed success at the Devonport 6-a-Side Gala. With Devon Netball also underway, it has been a term full of competition, skill, and participation.

Congratulations to all students who represented the College this term, and thank you to our coaches, senior students, and community partners for their support. We encourage you to read the wonderful wrap-up prepared by Mr Sam O’Keeffe in this week’s newsletter for all the details.

Performing Arts

Our amazing Performing Arts students continue to shine, with a large number recently participating in the 96th Devonport Eisteddfod. Congratulations to all students who put themselves forward to perform, sharing their talent and creativity on stage in front of the wider community.

Students achieved success across drama, music and dance, with several invited to perform at the showcase finale and others recognised with major awards and trophies. We are very proud of all who represented the College so well.

A full summary of results and awards is available in this week’s newsletter.

Uniform Store Opening

Today marked the final day of trade for our on-campus Uniform Shop, and we thank families for their support over many years. Mrs Ro Briggs and the Midford uniform shop team are incredibly excited for this next chapter, and we look forward to celebrating the opening of the new Midford Devonport Uniform Store on Friday, 10 October, located at 60A Stewart Street.

The store will also offer extended trading hours at the beginning of Term 4 to support summer uniform changeover requirements.
Further details, including full trading times and booking links, are available on our Uniform Page on the College website and via the College’s Facebook and Instagram.

Term Break

As we step into the term break, we encourage all students and families to take this time for rest, reflection, and rejuvenation. The weeks ahead will bring the warmth of Term 4 along with important milestones — senior exams, end-of-year celebrations, and the many events that mark the close of our school year.

The College will continue to operate during regular hours over the break, and we thank our Business Services and Utilities staff who work during this time to prepare the College for the term ahead. We hope this holiday provides the chance to pause, spend time with loved ones, and return refreshed and ready for the opportunities that await in the final term.

We wish everyone a safe, fun and restful break.

Sports

Term 3 Sport Wrap-Up

SOk

By Mr Sam O'Keeffe, Sports Coordinator

It has been a busy and exciting finish to Term 3 sport at SBSC, with students proudly representing the College across multiple rosters and competitions.

Year 7/8 Football

The Year 7/8 Football team capped off a fantastic first season in the NSATIS roster with a grand final appearance against Scotch Oakburn College in Launceston. SOC, the only team to defeat SBSC during the season, proved strong opposition in a hard-fought contest.
Our boys played with determination, keeping the game close in the first half before SOC gained momentum in the second. Despite finishing runners-up, the team should be proud of an outstanding debut season in NSATIS football. A big thank you to Mr Brown for his guidance and coaching throughout the year.

NSATIS Netball

Our NSATIS Netball teams wrapped up their seasons earlier this term. While wins were hard to come by, both teams showed significant improvement, commitment, and teamwork across the roster.

We especially acknowledge and thank our graduating seniors, Maggie Broomhall, Gemma Last, Addison Smith, Gemma McCoy, Jade McCoy, Olivia Ray, and Tamsyn Wells for their years of service, school pride, and leadership. Thank you also to Mrs Clarke and Mrs Van Buuren for their coaching and support.

Boys NSATIS Soccer

The Boys Soccer team finished 4th on the ladder, narrowly missing finals, but enjoyed another strong season. The side was led superbly by Captain Joss Littler, who has represented SBSC for four consecutive NSATIS seasons and been a cornerstone of the program.

We thank Joss, along with fellow senior players Aidan Reynier, Taj Taylor, and Jesse Ianuali, for their dedication to SBSC soccer. The team also extends its gratitude to Mr Colin Innes for his coaching and leadership.

Girls NSATIS Soccer

The Lady Saints had a historic year in just their second season on the NSATIS roster. After a slow start, the team rallied to finish top of the ladder and host the NSATIS grand final. Following a thrilling 0–0 draw with St Patrick’s College, SBSC was crowned NSATIS Girls Soccer Champions, the first in school history, earning the right to host the SATIS grand final.

In the SATIS decider, the Lady Saints battled hard against Guilford Young College, who were chasing their fourth consecutive title. Keeper Chloe Casey produced brilliant saves to hold GYC at bay early, but the visitors eventually prevailed 4–0.

The team can be immensely proud of their efforts and achievements. A special mention goes to Sophie Abraham, our only Year 12 player, for her contribution in her final season. Thank you also to Mr Allen for his coaching and dedication.

The College would also like to thank the Devonport Strikers soccer club for their hospitality throughout the year. We are fortunate to be able to use such a fine facility for all of our NSATIS soccer games.

SATIS Swimming

Our Swimming team competed in Hobart at the SATIS Swimming on Tuesday 16th of September. We had some great results. Congratulations to all involved.

Devon Netball

Our three Devon Netball teams are competing strongly in the spring roster, with all teams currently sitting third in their divisions after three rounds. Players have shown excellent spirit and teamwork, proudly representing the College in a tough competition.

6-a-Side Soccer

Over 150 SBSC students participated in the Devonport Junior Soccer Association 6-a-Side Gala Day, enjoying two fantastic days of fun, skill, and competition.

SBSC achieved some excellent results, including:
