Principal's News

Welcome to Week 4 of Term 4

SRa

By Mr Stuart Ralph, Principal

Last week was a wonderful celebration for our Year 12 Graduates, and while this was a time for celebration, our 11 and 12 students' attention now quickly turns to exams. TASC practical exams for Drama and Dance took place over the last two weeks, while oral exams for Languages were held this week.

It has been pleasing to see so many students on campus seeking help from staff to prepare for exams during SWOTVAC week.

We wish our students every success as exams start on Monday. The following prayer is on the wall of our senior study room, and students will walk past this as they enter their exams.

Ever-generous God,
You inspired St Mary MacKillop
to live a life that brought
constant hope and encouragement
to those whom she encountered.

With confidence in your generous and loving providence,
and together with St Mary,
we ask that you keep our seniors in your care.

Free them from anxiety,
and inspire them to perform at their best
during exams.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Jump Rope for Heart

Tomorrow, our Year 7 students will participate in Jump Rope for Heart. I thank Mr Steve Ryan, our Head of Physical Education, for his organisation of the event, and Mrs Jo Aherne for her work with our students in Year 9 who are looking to become sports leaders in 2026, who will help run the event with our Year 7 students.

High School Basketball Championships
We wish all teams competing at the High School Basketball Championships every success. Enjoy representing your College, embrace the spirit of competition, and above all, have fun with your peers.

Memorial Mass

On Tuesday morning, the College held its annual Memorial Mass in memory of St Brendan-Shaw College students who passed during their time here. This Mass coincides with All Souls' Day in our Church calendar. As reflected in our memorial garden, these young men and women will forever be remembered. Families gathered and placed a candle on the wall of remembrance during this service.

We remember the following:

Amy Batt, Katie Becker, Dylan Burgess, Georgia Lewtas, Rhys Tobin, Robert Garland, Grant McConnon, David Campbell, Gerard Derlagen and Ethan Maine.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
~Amen~

Social Media Age Restrictions

The Government has recently released information for schools, parents and students regarding the Social Media Age Restrictions Laws, which begin on 10 December.

The changes aim to protect under-16s from the pressures and risks they can be exposed to while logged in to social media accounts.

I encourage all parents to start preparing for this change by reading the Parent FAQ.

Important Dates for Year 10 Students

Friday 21 November: Year 10 Celebration Dinner
Monday 1 December - Wednesday 3 December: Year 10 Camp
Monday 8 December - Friday 12 December: Year 10 Transition Week

Remembrance Day

This coming Tuesday is Remembrance Day, and our students will come together to pay their respects. On 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and on the verge of collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, ending the First World War. As a mark of respect to those who have died and suffered, Australians are encouraged to pause at 11:00 am to observe one minute’s silence and remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts.

Red poppies are often worn on this day. The tradition originates in a poem written in 1915 by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a doctor in the Royal Canadian Medical Corps. Lieutenant Colonel McCrae noticed that, despite the devastation caused by the war to towns, farms and forests, thousands of tiny red poppies began growing everywhere in Spring. This inspired his poem, In Flanders Fields.

Stanza I: In Flanders Fields (1915) – John McCrae
In Flanders fields, the poppies blow.
Between the crosses, row on row
That marks our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

The Ode
(from For the Fallen, 1914) – Laurence Binyon
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Congratulations to Year 10 students Oakley Vernon and Will Potter

Congratulations to Year 10 student, Oakley Vernon, who made the podium at the Tasmanian All School Athletics Competition over the long weekend, placing 3rd in the U18 Mens 200 metres. Will Potter, Year 10, won the U18 Mens 3km.

I thank all families for their ongoing support.

Yours sincerely,

Thought of the Day

The Impact You Make Every Day

You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference and you have to decide what kind of a difference you want to make.
– Jane Goodall

Dame Jane Morris-Goodall (born 1934), formerly Baroness Jane van Lawick-Goodall, is an English primatologist and anthropologist. She is considered the world's foremost expert on chimpanzees after 60 years of studying wild chimpanzees' social and family interactions. Goodall first visited Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania to observe its chimpanzees in 1960.

She is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and the Roots & Shoots programme and has worked extensively on conservation and animal welfare issues. As of 2022, she is on the board of the Nonhuman Rights Project. In April 2002, she was named a United Nations Messenger of Peace. Goodall is an honorary member of the World Future Council.

A Spotlight on Participation: Positive Behaviour Support at St Brendan-Shaw College

By Mrs Josie Lutwyche, Director of Pastoral Care

Week 6 sees the College mark the halfway mark for Term 4. Alongside the learning that is ongoing in our classrooms, teachers continue to implement and utilise our PBS framework to ensure safe, supportive learning environments for students.

PBS – Learning Respecting Participating

Did you know, the goals of Schoolwide Positive Behaviour support the social, emotional and behavioural needs of all students at the College. Our PBS is in place to provide clear structures for using evidence-based practices that benefit all students. It includes the collation of data to guide decision-making and improve student supports, while helping to upskill staff with evidence-based practice. As educators, we continue to work with students to explicitly teach the positive behaviours that reflect our PBS values, helping them make positive choices.

In recent weeks, we have shared with families our Learning and Respecting values aligned to our PBS framework. The third and final value of our 3 PBS posters focuses on the value, Participating.

This week’s PBS focus is Participating. We encourage you to discuss and take moments to reflect on what participating positively in the classroom looks like for your young person. I have included some questions below that you may like to use to start a conversation at home.

  • Tell me about a time this week when you made a positive contribution in class.
  • Who did you encourage or support today? How did it help them?
  • Did someone encourage you this week? What did they do that made a difference?
  • What is one success, big or small, you could celebrate from today?
  • Was there something challenging this week that you still had a go at? How did that feel?
  • Why do you think participating and contributing to the class community matters?

Jump Rope for Heart

Mr Steve Ryan, Jump Rope for Heart Co-ordinator

By Mr Steve Ryan, Jump Rope for Heart Co-ordinator

This Friday 7 November, our Year 7 Students will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart. Under the guidance of our 2026 Sports Leader applicants, the Year 7 students will participate in skipping activities for periods 1 and 2. The day helps raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and a healthy diet in our day-to-day lives. It also helps raise funds for the Heart Foundation to continue its valuable research into Heart Disease.

On the day, Year 7 students can wear their HPE uniform for the day. Students are aiming to raise $2000 for the Heart Foundation, so any contribution you can make is welcome. All Year 7 students and parents have received information on how to register and use the online fundraising portal. Please bring a water bottle and a hat.

Vinnies Christmas Appeal – Thank You and Final Weeks Reminder

Vinnies Christmas Appeal

Thank you to every family who has already contributed to our Vinnies Christmas Appeal. The generosity of our community is heartwarming, with hampers in homerooms steadily filling with pantry staples, festive treats and thoughtful extras that will help make Christmas a little brighter for families in need.

We are now halfway through the collection period, and there is still plenty of time to get involved. Each homeroom is working towards a Christmas hamper with a mix of essentials and a few luxuries, along with an anonymous Christmas card written by students to share messages of hope and kindness.

If you are able to contribute over the coming weeks, some suggested items include:

  • Essentials: tinned food, pasta and rice, long-life milk, tea and coffee, hygiene products (new and unopened)
  • Luxuries: Christmas desserts and treats, chocolate and biscuit packs, small decorations, toys or children’s books (second-hand is welcome if in good condition)

Homemade food items are also welcome, as long as they include a clear ingredient list.

All donations will be collected by Friday 5 December.

Community members without a current student at the College are warmly invited to drop off donations at the Caritas Office.

Thank you for your continued support of the Vinnies Christmas Appeal and for the care you show to others in our wider community.

Thank you for helping Vinnies support families who need a little extra care this Christmas!

Building Confident Money Skills for Life

Natalie Healey Vocational Education and Training Coordinator

By Mrs Natalie Healey, Vocational Education and Training Coordinator

St Brendan-Shaw College and Youth Development and Training have worked together since 2018 to deliver the FNS10120 Certificate I in Basic Financial Literacy to Year 10 students. The qualification helps young people understand Australian financial services and grow their financial literacy.

More than 400 SBSC students have completed the course since the partnership began. Students tell us the learning is practical and useful. They explore everyday decisions such as how to plan a budget, set up savings and understand superannuation. These skills support positive habits that can make a difference now and after school.

FNS10120 Certificate I in Basic Financial Literacy

Congratulations to our Year 10 students who have achieved the Certificate I in Basic Financial Literacy. Congratulations on this achievement and the practical money skills you have developed.

We thank Youth Development and Training for their expertise. We look forward to continuing this partnership so future students can benefit from the program.
