Welcome to Week 6 of Term 4

SRa

By Mr Stuart Ralph, Principal

This week, our Year 9 students experienced their Solo Camp as part of the Rite Journey program.

In the text ‘Exploring the Power of Solo, Silence and Solitude’, research shows that there are many positives to be gained by teenagers having this opportunity, with the following significant aspects:

  • Opportunities for personal growth and increased trust in one’s ‘inner voice’.
  • A break from the fast pace of life.
  • A temporary reprieve from the digital world.
  • The ability to be present in life.

The peacefulness of a solo experience provides a healthy, healing, and rejuvenating encounter. We can all benefit from some silence and solitude from time to time!

‘Once we settle into solitude, it is a beautiful thing. It creates spiritual sustenance. It gives us much-needed time to reflect. It’s our opportunity for long-ignored thoughts and feelings to emerge. It’s a chance to quietly acknowledge fears that linger below the surface, unacknowledged, and weaken our emotional foundations. Reflective, thoughtful time can surface hopes and dreams of a better future, support intuition, and encourage us to expand our emotional horizons.’ (Ari Weinzweig, 2024)

As an educator who taught and led The Rite Journey for over a decade, I know the profound impact it will have on our community and, most importantly, our students. The Rite Journey is not designed to be easy because life is not easy, and our young people need to be challenged to step out of their comfort zones in a supportive environment.

Over the last two decades, it has been evident to me that if we are to make positive changes for the benefit of our young people, we need to examine how we do things and provide unique experiences.

International Men’s Day

On Monday, the College celebrated International Men's Day. This day honours the positive value men bring to the world, their families, and their communities worldwide. We highlight positive role models and raise awareness of men’s wellbeing. Our theme for 2024 is “Positive Male Role Models”.

During the day, we held a staff breakfast and BBQ for the students. This was an excellent opportunity to reflect on the values of respect, kindness, and unity while celebrating essential males in our students' lives.

High School Basketball Championships

I congratulate all the students who represented the College last weekend. It was a pleasure to witness the students representing their College with pride. Congratulations to our Year 7/8 Girls who won their Championship and 9/10 Boys who were runners-up. Our committed staff have done an amazing job coaching and managing teams. Thanks to Mr Sam O’Keeffe, Mr Steve Ryan, Mr Kurt Byard, Mr Braden van Buuren, Mrs Sandra Farr, Mrs Cheryl Sheehan, Mrs Shania Brown, and Mrs Jo Aherne. I also congratulate students Lucy Aherne, who coached our Year 9/10 Girls team, Ethan Savage, assistant coach of the 9/10 Boys team, and Jade McCoy, who supported us on Sunday.

Congratulations Chloe Casey

I congratulate Year 10 Student Chloe Casey on being selected for the Tasmania U’19 Cricket team. Chloe will travel to Perth from December 2 to 9.

Congratulations Baltimore Heald

Year 9 student Baltimore Heald has been selected to attend the Curious Minds program (National STEM extension program for girls in Years 8-10). The program will see Baltimore attend an immersion camp in Canberra for a week in December.

Year 10 Camp

We wish our Year 10 students well as they head to the Tasman Peninsula for camp next week. Students will visit Port Arthur, complete the Cape Hauy walk, and experience a Tasman Island cruise with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys.

I would like to thank all members of our community for your ongoing support.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Stuart Ralph
Principal

A Reflection on Kindness

“Kindness is one thing you can’t give away. It always comes back.” — George Skolsky

Kindness is a powerful reminder of how small actions can have a big impact. Whether at work or in our personal lives, being kind often creates positive effects that go far beyond what we see. It has a way of coming back to us, improving life for everyone involved.

George Skolsky, the author of this quote, is a writer who focuses on positive thinking and self-improvement.

Ethical Pork Farming: Value Adding for Added Value

CCh

By Mrs Crista Christie, Teacher

The Year 10 Agriculture class recently had the absolute pleasure of visiting Fork it Farm, a Tasmanian, free-range, ethically-run pig farm. Contrary to traditional mass pork production, Daniel and Kim Croker provide a completely different experience for their animals. Their system is an outdoor pasture experience, divided into almost a wagon-wheel shaped rotation system whereby animals move to fresh pastures and experience a mixed diet. While pig farming ethics have come a long way in the last two decades, Daniel and Kim are well above the curve.

The most inspiring aspect of this excursion was their [Daniel and Kim’s] passion for lifestyle over commercial growth. Kim spoke to students about their determination to provide quality over quantity, bolstering nutrition and genetics versus bulk production, and maximising animal health and nutrition for their consumers. Kim unpacked their business ethos ‘snout to tail’ – nothing is wasted. True to message, they guided students to their boutique shop front containing small goods, preserves and, of course, a myriad of pork products – from sumptuous pancetta, chorizo, bacon, ham, prosciutto, to fresh cuts of pork, and even dried ears and snouts for doggie treats. They stand true to their vision.

The excursion provided a sobering and even reverent appreciation for both animals and our state. If we [10 Ag] have recognised one thing through our industry visits (and samples!), it’s that Tasmanian products and farmers really do care about quality.

“There are many reasons why I believe learning must happen authentically, off site or hands on,” Mrs Christie emphasised. “You can tell students something 100 times and they may not hear you or care… but when you stand in front of animals, crops, landscapes, pastures, horizons and plants… the mood shifts; they sober and listen; they focus, explore and inquire. Suddenly, what seems irrelevant is very relevant and personal. That’s why it’s very important to us to get our kids outside and on site.”

Our sincerest thanks to Daniel and Kim for hosting us and sharing their commitment to agriculture and animal welfare.

Deck the sheds with bits of icing!

As part of a delightful pre-Christmas activity, our Year 10 Agriculture students got hands-on creating Gingerbread Sheds, adding a festive touch to their studies! These adorable creations were undoubtedly as delicious as they looked.

  • Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone
  • Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium

Performance Opportunities

Students will have exciting opportunities to showcase their progress:

  • Music Soirées held twice a year.
  • Combined Schools Workshop Days throughout the year.
  • A Combined Schools Major Concert to celebrate their achievements at the end of the year.

Why choose music?

Research shows that learning to play an instrument can significantly enhance children’s abilities in learning, memory, and social interactions. Participating in music is also a key part of a well-rounded and balanced education, helping students build confidence, discipline, and a love of the arts.

If your child may be interested in this experience, we encourage you to submit an expression of interest.

Lions '"Youth Of The Year"

Lions Youth of the Year Poster

Since its inception in 1964, the Lions "Youth of the Year"  program has a proud history in encouraging and fostering leadership skills in Australian students approaching the end of their secondary years.

By emphasising qualities like contribution to the community and school, public speaking, academic skills, sporting and cultural involvement, Youth of the Year aims to bring forth the next generation of outstanding young Australians.

In Tasmania, the program is divided into the three regions, North, North-West and South. Clubs from each region seek potential entrants for their local schools and/or colleges. The entrants are divided up between the participating clubs and the club winners contest a regional final, and the three regional winners contest a state final, the winner of which competes in the National Final at the Lions National Convention.

Tasmania has a proud history with several National winners over past years. Just a few weeks ago, past State Winner Sam Watson was announced as Tasmania's newest Rhodes Scholar!

The program is aimed at students who are contributors to their schools and communities and who wish to challenge themselves to gain experience in public speaking and presenting their credentials to a panel of judges in a non-threatening environment. There is no cost to the contestants and it always seems to be a very positive experience, regardless of the final results.

All the information needed is on the Youth of the Year website at Lions Australia.

Information is also on the Youth of the Year Facebook page.
