Principal's News

Welcome to Week 8 of Term 2

SRa

By Mr Stuart Ralph, Principal

Last Friday, Catholic School Parents Australia visited the college after being selected as one of 46 schools across Australia. This was part of a research project to hear the voices of parents and school staff about how to build and maintain effective school-parent communication. St Brendan-Shaw College was the last school to be interviewed for the research project, and the findings will be shared with all schools involved toward the end of 2024.

This survey will provide examples of how all schools can build and maintain effective school-parent communication.

Senior Exams

Yesterday, our senior students began their mid-year exams, which will run until Wednesday, June 26th. During this time, students may start showing signs of stress, with some becoming anxious about being prepared and doing their best.

This stress can also flow into the home environment. Students often think that everything hinges on the result of one exam. First, seeing the mid-year exams from a different perspective is essential. Teachers and students need to gauge how well students progress through the course. As such, exams often provide good insight into where both strengths and gaps lie, and this is invariably articulated by the teacher in the mid-year report. However, exams offer just one set of marks on several criteria. Teachers use many assessment tools throughout the year to arrive at the final end-of-the-year result.

For pre-tertiary subjects, mid-year exams can form only part of the internal component submitted to TASC at the end of the year. That being said, mid-year exams are an excellent learning experience for students in Grades 11 and 12 to prepare for final exams, including preparing for the stress they inevitably bring.

Sports

Our senior football team has achieved a remarkable feat, qualifying for the Second XVIII State Final. This is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and the spirit of St Brendan-Shaw College. We are all proud of their achievement, especially as this is our first year back fielding a team above 9/10 in several years. Let's all support them on Wednesday, July 3rd, at the TCA ground in Hobart.

Our Junior Soccer teams completed their last game of the season on Monday afternoon. Our 7/8 Green squad finished with a win defeating Leighland Christian School, while 7/8 Navy defeated Marist Regional College in a close game, winning 4-3. I would like to thank Mr Sam O’Keeffe, Mrs Crista Christie and Miss Sophie Lansley for their management and organisation of the teams. Senior Student Sophie Abraham is congratulated for coaching the St Brendan-Shaw College green team.

Subject Information Night

This is a reminder that our Subject Information Evening for students in Years 8-12 in 2025 is being held on Wednesday, 3 July. Current Years 7-9 students are encouraged to attend between 3:30 - 5:00pm. Students in Years 10 and 11 (Years 11 and 12, 2025) are encouraged to attend 5:00 - 6:30pm. Mr Gerry Peters will give families a presentation on TASC at 5:00pm in the Genesis Centre.

Year 7 Enrolments for 2025

Round one enrolment for Year 7 in 2025 students will close on Friday, 28 June. Over the last month, we have interviewed a significant number of students. These interviews will continue this Saturday, 22 June, with a Principals tour at 10:30am. Please email PrincipalsEA@sbsc.tas.edu.au to register your attendance on this tour.

Chess Tournament

On Tuesday, our Chess club students attended the Interschool Chess tournament. Logan Page was our top-scoring player for the day.

Cross Country

On Thursday 13 June, our Representative students attended the All Schools Cross Country at Symmons Plains. 28 students represented the College.

The Rite Journey

This Friday, 21 June, our Rite Journey (Year 9) male students will be fortunate to meet Mr David Foster OAM, former world champion wood chopper. David will come and share his life experiences with our young men, focusing on what it means to be a man and how important it is to demonstrate respect to females.

On Thursday, 4 July, Mr Scott Darlow will visit all of our Year 9 students. I have known Scott for over 18 years, and we are very fortunate to have him work with our students. Scott is a passionate Indigenous educator who regularly speaks in 100+ schools globally annually in Australia, the UK, and Asia. He uses his music and speaking skills to entertain and educate audiences Australia-wide about First Nations culture, Australian history, racial tolerance, harmony, and critical social matters. His keyword "FLUTE" (Forgiveness, Love, Understanding, Tolerance, and Empathy) forms part of his work with the students on the day.

Scott's Visit coincides with Naidoc week, the first week of the school holidays, 7 -14 July.

Fostering Emotional Intelligence Through Fiction

Kylie Reid, Librarian

By Kylie Reid, Librarian

Developing emotional intelligence is crucial for children's growth and understanding of themselves and others. The Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) shortlisted titles recognise outstanding works each year, many of which foster empathy and emotional awareness.

Here are three notable books from the 2024 awards that allow readers to connect with diverse experiences and perspectives:

Grace Notes by Karen Comer

Grace Notes

Set during Victoria's 2020 lockdowns, the story follows Grace as she supports her grandmother in a nursing home, dealing with the loss of her husband and isolation. Through Grace's compassion, readers gain insight into the struggles of the elderly during isolation. This story may help young readers develop empathy and respond to others with kindness.

Inkflower by Suzi Zail

Ink Flower

This is a powerful Young Adult novel that helps develop emotional intelligence through its exploration of family secrets, hope and healing. Based on a true story, Lisa grapples with her father's terminal illness and his untold experiences in Auschwitz. Inkflower is an ideal title for study in English and History, fostering empathy and emotional growth in students.

Being Jimmy Baxter by Fiona Lloyd

Being Jimmy Baxter

Jimmy navigates challenging circumstances, including family struggles and school difficulties, while hiding his true self. Through his journey, readers learn to empathise with Jimmy's feelings of insecurity and his efforts to overcome adversity. The book highlights the importance of understanding and supporting others, making it a valuable read for developing empathy and emotional intelligence in young readers.

These CBCA-shortlisted books offer windows into diverse emotional experiences, nurturing empathy, compassion and emotional intelligence in our young readers. Through storytelling, children can safely explore complex emotions and perspectives, equipping them with essential skills for their daily interactions and relationships. You can find these titles and more at the SBSC Library.

Champions Challenge for Beyond Blue

The SRC are very excited to announce our Term 2 fundraiser. We are supporting Tristan Wells in his run from Devonport to Hobart in October, with all funds raised going to his fundraiser for Beyond Blue.

Tristan addressed the College at our most recent assembly. He shared his story about mental health and the importance of having support available. Beyond Blue is a fantastic resource for anyone struggling with their mental health or just looking for reliable and safe information or advice.

On our last day of term, we will be holding our staff ‘Champions Challenge’, which will see our amazing staff volunteers competing in an obstacle course race.

Champions Challenge

If you would like to donate to Beyond Blue as part of our fundraiser, donations can be made online via Square or by cash or card at the College.

    NSATIS Seconds Football Final Success

    Sports Coordinator

By Mr Sam O'Keeffe, Sports Coordinator

The NSATIS Boys' Football team played in the Division 2 Boys NSATIS Grand Final last Wednesday. After a successful season, with only one loss, the team earned the right to a home final, and it was a cracking final at Girdlestone Park.

The Saints got off to an early lead, but St Patrick's College played an excellent first half, going into the long break with a 20-point lead. This was a game of two halves, though, with the Saints fighting back in the third. The likes of Miller and Lucas scored 4 unanswered goals between them to give the Saints men a 1-point lead going into the third break.

The fourth quarter was intense, with multiple lead changes. However, the Saints found themselves 9 points in front with 7 minutes to go. Desperate defence from the Saints helped keep the boys in front, and they eventually went on to win the game 65-54 to be crowned the NSATIS Boys 2nds Champions.

The team will now turn its attention to the SATIS final to be held on Wednesday 3 July in Hobart.

Well done to all the players and coaches, Mr Byard and Mr Van Buuran, on a fantastic season.

The College would also like to thank the East Devonport Football Club for their hospitality during the season and for allowing the College and visiting teams access to their changerooms each week.

Team GREEN for the Win or Lose!

    Crista Christy

    By Mrs Crista Christie

Miss Campbell and Miss Christie are so proud of our SBSC Green team for their motivation and keen participation.

The highlight game was, of course, against our Marist rivals, mid-season. We hadn’t done too well yet; morale was low, and the team didn’t have a lot of hope.

    “We won’t win this!”

“We’ve got no subs. They’ve got eight!"

Thankfully, our beloved Year 11 student coach, Sophie Abraham, rallied the team into action. After a brutal start, we clawed our way back to even by halftime; hope was renewed, and positivity re-energised the team to win the game by a healthy margin.

Unfortunately, the match wins began and ended that day, but we saw every player improve and team spirit strengthen.

After our last game, on Monday evening, June 17th, it was awesome to hear the team congratulating each other on a well-played game and individual successes:

    “Nice goal!”

    “We defended well!”

    “That was a good game!”

“I couldn’t believe you stopped that!”

Green for the win or lose!

Sincerest thanks to our wonderful Coach Sophie for sacrificing her Monday afternoons to coach our team despite her own College studies to. Your guidance and support helped the team improve individually and as a collective.

    Team Navy

    Miss Lansley

    By Miss Sophie Lansley

Mr O'Keeffe and Miss Lansley were proud to coach and manage the other 7/8 Soccer team – SBSC Navy!

Every Monday afternoon, week after week, this team has proved a powerhouse of resilience, teamwork and sportsmanship.

No matter the goal tally, they took the time to reflect on where they could improve as a team, taking direction from Mr O'Keeffe and filling different positions when needed. Win or lose, they had a great mentality and were encouraging of each other every single game.

I have been so proud to watch them each week and see how far they've come. They finished with an absolute belter of a win against Marist Regional College here on our home turf.

Well done, Navy! A huge thank you to all players and families and to Mr O'Keeffe for making it all happen!
