Thought of the Day

Principal's News

Principal's Message 26 February 2021

Last week's newsletter was not published and has been combined with an earlier newsletter for this week as the College's publications coordinator has needed to take some leave.

The faces of Project Compassion for these two weeks include:

  • Margaret, a 39-Year-old teacher at a vocational school for deaf students in the Solomon Islands.  She was born deaf, so she knows the challenges it poses to education and employment; and
  • Olivia, one of around 25% of Tanzanian girls and women over 15 years cannot read or write.  Now, as an adult, Oliva runs a kiosk and works as a farm labourer - but her business was losing money because she couldn’t add up. Oliva enrolled in Caritas Australia-supported literacy and numeracy classes. She also set up a classroom at home to teach her neighbours, for free, because they were too shy to attend larger classes.

Last week's swimming carnivals were impacted upon by the weather, but thankfully the older students were more familiar with the Carnivals and I observed great spirit despite the conditions.  The Year 7 and 8 carnival, fortunately, had a glorious day of fun in fine weather.

I want to thanks those Year 7 parents and students who responded to my request for feedback on how the beginning of secondary school has been.  I really valued the information.  I particularly enjoyed reading the responses from the students.

We are in conversations with various agencies in relation to improving traffic safety on James Street, especially in the afternoons.  We hope to do our best to improve the flow of exiting traffic as well as address road width due to parking.  Again, I implore parents not to rank-park on the south side of James Street, east of the entrance as it creates danger.  Perhaps consider driving by and then returning later, or negotiating another pick-up location with your child is a safer option.

Individual Learning Plan meetings are currently underway.  Last week we underwent an audit of our 2020 census data.  This audit checked that our digital data was supported with written evidence and included a significant review of our ILP practices.  In relation to the review, nothing was found wanting in relation to the delivery of learning to students.

Next Tuesday 9 March is a student-free day as a consequence of TASC Moderation Days that will see many teachers participating in moderation meetings with teachers from other schools across the state.

Stay safe and keep happy,

Frank Pisano

Drop-off and Pick-up of Students

As previously published in the newsletter, we ask parents not to block traffic on James St - this creates a traffic hazard and disrupts the flow of buses exiting the College.

Our morning drop off usually works well but during the afternoon we experience problems with the flow of traffic through the James St drop off pick up area if parents arrive too early and park in the drop off pick up zone.

As the school day does not end until 3.00pm, students will not be available to be picked up until
approximately 3.05pm, so please do not arrive prior to this time.
We require the traffic to move continuously and smoothly through this area, so please aim to arrive at a time when your child will be waiting for you rather than you waiting for them.

If your child has not arrived at the loading point and you are requested to move on, please be
courteous to other drivers and leave and re-enter the grounds, by which time your child may have
arrived for pick-up.

We are fortunate in that we sit on a spacious block, giving parents additional options for picking up and dropping off your child if they don't catch a bus to and from school.

Sorell Street, while narrow, does have a footpath. Nicholls Street and Percy Street are both wide and spacious. George Street is another option but we ask that parents do not enter the staff car park in George Street, or the Student/Staff car park in Percy Street.

While we do open the Percy Street car park to parents when we have after hours events, during the school day this is exclusively for the use of students who drive, and staff.
This is something we ask to keep our P platers as safe as possible.

Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring that traffic flows as smoothly and safely as possible in
and around our College.

Swimming Carnival Photos

Thank you to students who attended either of the Swimming Carnivals this week. The splitting of the carnivals into a junior and senior day was well received, and although the weather was less than desirable on Thursday, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.

Photos from both days have been uploaded to Facebook (links below). If any student has a photo online of themselves that they want removed please send a direct message on Facebook or send an email to newsletter@sbsc.tas.edu.au asking for it to be taken down (no reasons are needed) and it will be done immediately.  We do follow Best Practice Guidelines for taking and posting of images (every photo is vetted first), and students safety and wellbeing is paramount.

JCP Development Camp

JCP Youth (BEAST) Development Camp -  for Young Men

JCP Youth in collaboration with MFX (Movement Effects) present a life changing event that will inspire, challenge and empower young people to become the best versions of themselves.

The Program:

Through the delivery of leadership content, along with physical and mental challenges – Our team will inspire and empower young people to create focus in their life, connect with core values, learn to take responsibility of their actions/ behaviours and start to positively contribute to their own lives and the wider community. The program is for individuals who want to explore their full potential. The program aims to build on life skills and an individual’s potential to be happy, healthy and positive people with high levels of motivation.

These programs will challenge each participant both physically and mentally. This MUST be a strong consideration for all participants who partake in the program.

History:

This program has been developed by Will Smith. Will is a youth leadership expert, coach and speaker. He is a former Tactical Operator in the Special Operations Group (Tasmania Police) and is now the CEO & Founder of JCP Empowering Youth. Will has been recognised in the Australian of the Year Awards and is known for his decade long youth work, developing, implementing and connecting innovative programs in Australia and around the world. Will is a nationally awarded role model that has been recognised for his leadership contribution to the Australian Community. He draws experiences from the red carpet of Hollywood, to working in the war-torn streets of an active red-zone in the Middle East.

JCP Youth and MFX have collaborated a ‘Dream Team’ of inspiring and motivational facilitators who will run the Development Camps. This three-day experience is aimed to be the most inspiring and empowering experience provided in a young persons upbringing. This program is rare and provides an opportunity to change an individual’s ordinary routine of life.
