Principal's News

Principal's Message 12 February 2021

I am keen to hear from any parent who is interested in nominating themselves or another parent to be appointed to the College Board.  I can provide a complete copy of the Terms of Reference for the Boards of Archdiocesan Schools, however, I include the following summary of the key responsibilities:

The Archdiocesan School Board is a vital structure in supporting the operation of the school at a local level. ….The Board has the following responsibilities in support of the leadership:

  • to support the Principal in the leadership of the school;
  • to promote the Catholic identity and evangelising mission of the school;
  • to develop the school vision, mission and strategic plan;
  • to develop school-level policies as appropriate;
  • to support the development of the school budget, the monitoring of the financial sustainability of the school and to assist with planning for capital development;
  • to ensure that the approved processes of review and monitoring of educational outcomes are implemented; and
  • to assist in collaboration, consultation and building of partnerships with the local parish/parishes, the parents and the broader community.

The board does not have responsibility for:

  • controlling of funds or the opening of bank accounts;
  • employing or performance managing of staff;
  • entering into contracts;
  • acquiring, holding or disposing of property; and
  • suing or being sued.

Some additional information for the SBSC Board follows:

  • The Board generally meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month during the school terms, for a total of 7 meetings per year, with the last being allocated to scrutinise the Budget for the following year.
  • Meetings begin at 5:30 pm in the Caritas Board Room at the College and generally conclude by 7:00 pm.

If you are interested in offering your gifts and skill, or if you want further information or a copy of the Terms of Reference, please contact Mrs Iola Turner (EA to the Principal) on 6424 7622 or at PrincipalsEA@sbsc.tas.edu.au.

The process requires completion of a brief form (available from Mrs Turner), which should be accompanied by a brief summary of your Resumé.  The Board requires these before its next meeting (on 23 February) in order to forward them to the Executive Director of Catholic Education Tasmania for his consideration, functioning as part of CET’s Governance framework.  New members should be notified by the Board’s AGM on 23 March, for a three-year appointment commencing on 31 March each year.

We have rescheduled some key dates, and these are available here.

For our Year 7 students and parents, I draw attention to the Meet The Teacher event to be held on Monday 22 February, commencing at 6:00 pm in Westcourt (off James St).  Arrivals commence from 5:45 pm to allow contact-tracing details to be collected ready for a 6:00 pm start.  The evening is designed for you to meet your child’s teachers, (especially the Core Class teachers), some key staff who work with students, as well as an opportunity to meet your child’s Homeroom teacher and House Coordinator.  It would be good if your Year 7 child could accompany you, so, recognising it as a school evening, we hope to be able to have you able to leave for home by 7:00 pm.

I look forward to receiving nominations from people willing to join our College Board, as well as connecting with Year 7 parents on 22 February.

Stay safe, keep happy and I will keep you in my prayers.

Frank Pisano
