Principal Message (Kim Walters Acting Principal)

Behaviour Management Processes
At the end of 2021, we undertook a review of our behaviour management processes at the college. The outcome was a more streamlined process, which I include here for parents' information. A copy of this flow chart appears in every classroom and common areas for students' information. The goal is to achieve consistency across the school and improve student behaviour and engagement. It has certainly made for a calmer start to the year.

Behaviour Management Flow Chart.

Year 10 Vaccinations
Devonport Council has advised that due to the number of Year 7 student vaccinations on Tuesday 5 April, the Meningococcal vaccination for Year 10 students has moved to Tuesday 1 November.

Nuisance TikTok Accounts
Over the past fortnight, we have become aware of two different TikTok accounts that serve no positive purpose. The account breached both privacy and copyright acts; content included images of students without consent and use of the College logo and name. The best way students can respond is to report the offending account and completely ignore all posts. Students who comment on these accounts only serve to "feed the beast" by giving the creator the attention they seek. Students received the above message in their daily notices, and I would be grateful if parents could reiterate this message.

Covid Plan
Given that there have been no significant changes to our Covidsafe Plan, we as a leadership team have decided to continue our "core business" approach for the remainder of Term 1, with no large indoor gatherings.

The Importance of Our Seniors
I love being a high school teacher. We sign up for the period in a young person's life when they make mistakes, and what a varied and interesting experience it is for us as teachers. At a Year 7-12 school like ours, we also have the privilege of seeing them mature and become giving and delightful young adults.

This year, we can see how wonderfully our Year 11 cohort has adopted the expectations of Senior Secondary students. Multiple teachers have commented on the group as a whole and individual students. I commend each of them for the way they have made this transition.

This week I have witnessed two of our senior students acting as mentors to their younger peers. They provide guidance, a listening ear, and advice that is more palatable to the juniors than the advice from parents and teachers. Giving their time and understanding is a real gift. I am grateful for the presence of our seniors each day in Homeroom, on the playground, and on school buses.

Our Senior Secondary Ball on Saturday 14 May is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate this stage of their journey at St Brendan-Shaw College.

Caritas Ukraine Project Compassion Appeal

We #standwithukraine.

For two weeks, starting this coming Monday, 28 March, the College will be collecting monetary donations to support the Ukraine crisis. Over 3.3 million people - including 1.5 million children, have fled their homes in Ukraine, and there have been at least 2,149 civilian casualties. Millions of Ukrainians continue to live through air raids and attacks as the conflict in Ukraine worsens daily.

The Vinnie's group will visit each homeroom every morning to collect donations (cash or card accepted), which will go directly to the Caritas Ukraine staff on the ground to provide families with emergency food, water, shelter, and hygiene support.

If you wish to donate, please visit www.caritas.org.au/donate/emer... your support is appreciated.

Free Bus Transport

From next Monday 28 March until 30 April 2022, students utilising any Merseylink school bus or general access services will receive free travel for the next five weeks under the Tasmanian Government's new initiative to reduce the cost of living.

Water Skiing

Our Sport for Girls and Sport for Boys classes each spent a day at Lake Barrington last week learning how to water ski. Our determined students had a blast working their way up to using the rope behind the boat.

Gymnastic State Championships

Last weekend, Maggie White and Aimee Duguid competed in the gymnastic State Championships. Both girls had successful days; Aimee competed against 72 gymnasts as a level 7 and placed 3rd overall on Saturday and 4th overall on Sunday. Maggie competed against 12 gymnasts as a level 8 and placed 2nd overall on both days.

Maggie will head to Queensland this May to compete in the State Finals.

Well done to both girls!

Congratulations to everyone for achieving such fantastic results! Next up, we will be competing at SATIS Head of River this weekend. Next week, some of our rowers will also represent the College at the Australian Rowing Championships, held in Nagambie, VIC. Good luck to all those participating!

Basketball

Basketball

The Lady Saints have had a dominant three weeks of basketball, finishing the season undefeated and earning the right to host the NSATIS Girls Divison 1 Basketball Grand Final. Over the last three weeks, the Lady Saints have sunk the spirits of their opposition like the Goliath to two tugboats defeating St Pats 65-31, Scotch Oakburn 75-25, and on Monday, they defeated North-West rivals Marist Regional College in a tight game 54-49. The Lady Saints will now turn their attention to the home court Grand Final on Monday 28 of March, where they will again face North-West rivals MRC in one of the best games of the year.

Tennis

Tennis

Tennis has had a big three weeks of tennis. The boy continued to improve throughout the season. Seven boys put their hands up to represent the College this season, and although they did not win every game, they remained competitive and committed for the whole season. The boys that represented the College were Baxter Tu, Cameron Welsh, Harrison Stillman, Tom Williams, Miller Young, Jonah Binder, and Tom Hartwell.

The ladies 1st had another successful season making finals for the 4th year in a row, and with a new team, the girls were competitive all year. The Lady Saints travelled to Launceston yesterday to play St Patricks in the NSATIS girl's 1st in the semi-final. The girls fought hard in all their games and came close to continuing their finals run. However, they would go down to St Pat's 32-37. The girls had a great year and again had great numbers, with Annabelle Radcliff, Asha Ianuali, Elizabeth Titlow, Chelbie Pickering, Chloe Pickering, Moleigh Clemens, and Leeyah Clemens representing the College.

The teams would like to thank Mr. Gleeson for coaching the team again this year.

Information Evening

Do you think St Brendan-Shaw College is the right option for your family but haven't had the opportunity to visit? If you would like to learn more about our College programs and facilities, we invite you to join us at the College for this year's Information Evening on Thursday 31 March at 5:30pm

We understand finding the right school community is an important family decision, we encourage parents to bring their children along to the evening. Throughout the evening, staff and students will give an insight into College life and what we have to offer. The evening will include short presentations, a guided tour of the College campus, with opportunities for answers to any questions you may have.

Community

The Devonport Youth Council

The Devonport Youth Council, which has started up this year, has been an excellent opportunity to communicate with other local young people about what problems and issues occur around Devonport. The Devonport Council initiated the program to get input from our community's youth to understand better what we see. In our first meeting, we came up with ideas of how we could make Devonport a better place, not just for the youth but for everyone. Some issues that we talked about were how there are not many activities for the age bracket of 13-21, so we talked about how we could fix these issues by having a gaming arcade or a sports/recreation centre. All the members of the Youth Council find it a great place to share their ideas and thoughts. The plan was for monthly meetings, but everyone agreed we should do it every fortnight as it was also enjoyable.

Five students represent the College on the council: Srishti Namoa, Jet Spicer, Emily Doran, Michael Hartree & myself. If you spend time in Devonport, feel free to speak to one of us to share your ideas for improving the area for youth.
