Principal's News

Principal's Message (Acting Principal, Kim Walters)

You will see in this newsletter a flyer advertising a 6-week Bodytalk program to be held next Term. Any student aged 15 or over as of Wednesday 1 June is eligible to participate in the program, and the facilitators may consider applicants who turn 15 later in the year. This small-group program aims to develop self-esteem and body confidence. We have invited Wellways to present this program at the college because we recognise a need in our students. Any interested student can speak to or email me, or parents can refer their child.

Our Information Evening is on tonight and is a wonderful opportunity to showcase all that the college offers in anticipation of Year 7, 2023. I thank all our staff most sincerely for their effort in preparing the event. Times like these remind me that our greatest asset is our staff and students, who continuously approach others with a generosity of spirit.

As a pastoral care team member, I plead with all parents to closely look at their child's social media accounts, ensure that all accounts are private, and regularly look at their posts to ensure all content is appropriate. Photos and posts that give away personal information, such as the school you attend, are unwise. Posts that demean or mock others say more about the person posting than the post's subject. I include for your reference a link to the parenting resources for ThinkUKnow, a program delivered to students by Constable Leesa Poulton, Police Youth Liaison for our area: https://www.thinkuknow.org.au/resources-tab/parents-and-carers.

At the start of Term, I was in the audience for the first round of the inter-school debating competition. A group of our Year 10 students who had never even watched a debate competed in their very first debate. This week, I was in the audience again as they competed in Round 6. The improvement they have made in this short time is incredible. Congratulations to our SBSC 2 team of Lachlan Churchill, Jackson Hayes, Harriet Mendham, and Lillian Smith on their dedication and significant improvement in such a short time (I was particularly impressed when they mentioned Physics twice in this debate). Special thanks to the dedicated Mrs Rachelle Littler & Ms Cheryl Gamble, who provide encouragement and help hone the students' skills and those of all students who take up the extracurricular opportunities offered to them in Debating Public Speaking.

As we are nearing the end of Term 1, I ask all students and parents to check that winter uniform items are in order in preparation for the start of Term 2. If you haven't already done so, please label all items clearly with the child's name. If any items are still missing, please check at Caritas.

Parent-Teacher Interviews are on Monday 4 April. You will have had access to your child's Interim Report this week and instructions for making interview appointments. Please take advantage of this opportunity, even if only to 'put a face to the name' or to say thank you. We value our partnership with parents and look forward to meeting you. If you are a new parent to the community, please ask your child to introduce you to their House Coordinator and/or Homeroom teacher on the night.

Our Athletics Carnival is Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 April. Yes, these days are compulsory, but they are also enormous fun. Students rotate through their events with their whole cohort of competitors, and they include novelty events such as the tug 'o' war. Any parent, male or female, who is a gifted sprinter is most warmly welcomed to join the staff relay team on Tuesday. Students are encouraged to attend the carnival wearing their house colour top to toe. Any student who cannot compete due to injury or anxiety is encouraged to speak to Mr O'Keefe before the day to be assigned a job that will assist in the smooth running of the day.

Caritas Ukraine Project Compassion Appeal

We #standwithukraine.

For two weeks, starting this coming Monday, 28 March, the College will be collecting monetary donations to support the Ukraine crisis. Over 3.3 million people - including 1.5 million children, have fled their homes in Ukraine, and there have been at least 2,149 civilian casualties. Millions of Ukrainians continue to live through air raids and attacks as the conflict in Ukraine worsens daily.

The Vinnie's group will visit each homeroom every morning to collect donations (cash or card accepted), which will go directly to the Caritas Ukraine staff on the ground to provide families with emergency food, water, shelter, and hygiene support.

If you wish to donate, please visit www.caritas.org.au/donate/emer... your support is appreciated.

Visiting Truffledore

On Tuesday, the Senior Food and Hospitality Enterprise students visited the Truffledore at Lower Barrington.

They learned how the new owners developed the business and how they kept it viable during the COVID-19 lockdown. The students sampled Truffledore's handcrafted truffle oil and dukkah. Students got up close and personal to feed the chickens who lay fresh eggs for their guests to have for breakfast topped with truffle when in season.

The intelligent, friendly truffle dogs also got some attention; the students watched closely as Cody, the truffle dog, found the hidden truffles through his skill and powerful nose.

A big thank you to the staff at the Truffledore, who gave a very educational and enlightening insight for our students to experience.

Sports

NSATIS Rowing

Throughout March, the College Rowing Team competed in the School Rowing Championships and the Head of The River at Lake Barrington.

Over the last few years, the team has grown, and this year we had 20 students represent the College at both regattas.

There were some stand-out performances over the month as well.

  • State Champions and Runners up
  • School Girls Open Double Scull - Ella Spaulding and Catherine Greenhill
  • School Girls Open Double Scull Runners up - Sophie Grave and Meg Castles
  • School Girls Open Coxed Quad - Meg Castles, Olivia Yeates, Ella Spaulding, Catherine Greenhill. Cox - Sarah Ellis.
  • School Girls U16 Double Scull - Lilly Barker and Sarah Welch
  • School Girls U16 single Scull Runner up - Lilly Barker

The Senior Girls also won the Senior Girls Head of the River aggregate for the second year in a row to top off the School Rowing season.

The College would like to thank the Mersey Rowing Club and their coaches, David Tippett, Merv Tippet, and  Kentish Rowing Club coach Graham Scattergood. All their hard work and support throughout the season, taking the time to coach and allowing us to use club boats, helped ensure the College was well placed at these events and into the future.

Well done to everyone involved.

NSATIS Basketball

The Lady Saints hosted Marist Regional College this week in the NSATIS Girls 1st Grand final. This game was the third time in four years that these two teams played off for the Grand Final, and both teams have shown that they are the teams to beat in the girls' basketball competition.

The game started well for the College, scoring early, but Marist was as electric as a smart car, and once they got into their rhythm, they were hard to stop. The Lady Saints accepted the challenge and played a hard four quarters against Marist, with a late surge not enough to reel Marist back.

Marist went on to win the game 71-43 and take home the 2022 silverware.

It was an excellent season for the Lady Saints, who had gone undefeated until the Grand Final.

The team would like to thank Taya Webb for coaching this season and Mrs Aherne for assisting the team each week.
