Principal's Message 3 June 2022

Upon being asked how a student could improve achievement, I shared the following, which I thought I'd like to share more broadly. My reply was:

Top tips for improving grades? The following are universally valid and apply to anyone.

  1. Attend every class. Absence from school should be rare.
  2. Do not think of the classroom as a social space.
    a. Don't sit with friends.
  3. Focus on what the teacher is saying.
    a. Important things will be repeated.
    b. Often, the teacher will say something like "this is important" or increase the volume of their voice. These are cues to pay particular attention to.
  4. Have the correct mindset: Self-talk/thinking like the following is helpful.
    a. "I can do this."
    b. "if I find it challenging, I'll ask for help."
    c. "Teachers want to help me."
    d. "Only the best understand something the first time - most of us take a bit longer."
    e. "All I need to do is get a "C" - there will be questions that I can't do unless I'm a rare "A" student, and some of them won't get it, either."

The fact that the student asked for advice is the first step to achieving what they hope for.

Stay safe, keep happy, have a good mindset, and I'll keep us in my prayers.

Year 7 Reflection

Monday and Tuesday this week, our Year 7 students were able to experience their first Reflection days with the College.

Marty Ogle from MJR facilitated the days. During the day, the students reflected on their own lives to see what they are grateful for and how to show the significant people in their lives how much they appreciate them. Marty used the acronym GATE (Grateful, Appreciative, Thankfulness, and Enthusiasm) to encourage our students to care more for the people who care for them.

Our teachers and Marty were so proud of our Year 7 cohort and how they participated on both days. Thank you, Marty and team, for your words of wisdom and time this week!

Mental Health Awareness Week

This week the SRC organised a Mental health awareness week. Each House group went on a mindfulness walk to clear their heads before class to start the week. On Wednesday, we had a ‘Hoodie Humpday.’ The day was based on feeling warm, safe, and comfortable in our school environment as we wear hoodies during winter to stay warm and safe. Today was Do-Nut Stress Day; we were treated to Beadoughs Donuts in the name of a stress-free day!

Mid Year Reports

A note to parents/guardians,
All Mid-Year Reports are due to be released next week.

Sports

Cross Country

This week, the College held the annual Cross Country and colour run. It was a lovely sunny but chilly afternoon for the cross country, but there was no rain. Students had a great time, particularly running through the colour run, and they all did a fantastic job along the course walking or running.

The Cross Country was a great way to add to Mental Health Awareness Week here at the College as we encourage students to do their best on the course, whether that be running or walking.

Congratulations to all students who participated, and thank you to all the staff who helped make the afternoon a fantastic experience for the students.

All Schools Mountain Bike Championships

Several students competed in the Tasmanian All Schools Mountain Bike Championships on Friday 20 May at the Tasmanian All Schools Mountain Bike Championships at the Trevallyn MTB course. There were some outstanding results, with Vinnie Manion and Oliver Sims placing 1st in the U17 team event.

The results of our students is exceptional with most schools having five or more riders for the team event. Monty Manion, Theodore Powell, and Cooper Henderson finished 5th in the U15 school team event, with Monty Manion finishing 1st in the individual event. Grace Sims was the lone female rider representing the College doing a great job finishing 7th in her U15 individual event.

Well done to all riders!
