Principal's Message 15 October 2020

As we begin the final term of a very different year to what we anticipated, it could be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the work is done and that students can ease into the summer holidays.  This would be a mistake.  Students may not be as lucky as Black Cavier's Jockey, Luke Nolan, was at Ascot when he was chasing the horse’s 22nd win from 22 starts.   Leading by a length in the final 100m, Nolan believed that his job was done and "shut down" a couple of strides from the winning post."  History shows that this almost resulted in his first loss with the horse.

Now, I'm not a follower of horse racing, however, I will stick with the theme.  I would rather students approached the last term with the mindset of Michelle Payne, the first female to ride a winner at the Melbourne Cup.  Her perseverance (in the face of adversity and gender bias) was instrumental in her cementing a place in sporting history.

So, just as a rock climber looks at the next handhold rather than the peak, I encourage students to focus on their lessons where they need to remain engaged in their own learning rather than looking at the end of the school year.  They can trust, however, that we are looking to provide opportunities for them to celebrate and be rewarded for their perseverance.

Stay safe and happy and I will keep you in my prayers,

Frank Pisano

Core Class Construction 2021

Parents of students in Years 7-9 will very shortly receive an email from me with a google form to complete, asking some questions that will assist us in constructing Core Class groupings for Year 8-10 2021.

The form will give parents the opportunity to identify 3-5 students your child would work well with in class, and up to 3 students that are not a good combination with your child, along with the reasons.

This year I am hoping that every parent will complete the form, so please, if you don't know, or prefer to leave that decision with us, write 'nil' for the compulsory questions, or simply reply to the email.

Hygiene and Barista Basics

This week and next, students have the opportunity to complete a Food Hygiene and Basic Barista Course. They had fun navigating their way around the coffee machine and producing some yummy beverages.

Terms and Conditions update

As part of our ongoing commitment to providing the best possible educational experience, we have continued to monitor and revise the Terms and Conditions which apply in all Catholic Education Commission Tasmania schools. We will therefore be introducing a small number of updates to the Terms and Conditions, which will apply to all current enrolments continued in 2020 as well as to new enrolments from 2021.

Click on the following link for a full copy of the updated Terms and Conditions, (see pages 12-17of the new enrolment form) which you should read carefully.  The changes made to the Terms and Conditions to note are as follows:

Clause 10. Special payment arrangements – has been changed to reflect upcoming changes to the Fee Assistance Policy; and
The inclusion of an additional paragraph addressing disclosure of personal and sensitive information for information management purposes.
The introduction of an additional clause in relation to referrals to School Support Services.
By continuing your child’s enrolment in 2021 from Monday 18 January 2021, you will be taken to have accepted these updates to the Terms and Conditions.

Please note, the enrolment application form above is for your reference only. (All changes to the existing form are highlighted.)

If you have any concerns about the updates, please contact the school office on 03 6424 7622 or by admin@sbsc.tas.edu.au before 9 November 2020. We would be happy to discuss the incoming changes with you further.

Who: Students and Staff

What: Book Week 2020

When: Thursday 22nd October

Where: At the College, of course!

Why: You are invited to dress up as a book character or a curious creature to celebrate Book Week.

Library Bookface Challenge

The Library invites all students and staff to participate in a Bookface Challenge!
  • Find a book cover with a face (there are some great possibilities in a box in the library)
  • Use the book cover you choose to create a striking photo that will blur the lines between reality by replacing the book’s cover with parts of your face (see the above examples)
  • Email your bookface picture to library@sbsc.tas.edu.au
  • Make sure you include your first and last name and the word "bookface" in the subject line of your email. Don’t forget to attach your photo!

Tips:

  • If the face on the book cover is the same size as your face, hold the book close.
  • If larger than your face, hold the book further away.
  • Get your friends involved!  Either to hold the book, take the photo, or to pose with you with their own bookface.
  • Great Prizes up for grabs. Winners announced  during Book Week 19th - 23rd October 2020.
