Thought of the Day

“As you ramble on through life, Brother, Whatever be your goal, Keep your eye upon the doughnut, And not upon the hole.” ― Margaret Atwood, The Blind Assassin

Principal's News

Principal's Blog 26 September 2019

When I was 17, I walked into my local country Police Station to have a driving test for my License.  Having grown up on a farm, I had a lot of experience driving, so my test was possibly the shortest in history - about 200 metres, from the Police station, around the War Memorial and back again.  For that, I received a licence to drive a car, truck and tractor. (The Police Seargent offered to include motorbike, but some level of self-preservation kicked in and I declined.)

Fast forward seven years, and I walked into a slightly larger local station to enquire about getting a Bus License (as the school I was teaching in had a bus).  The officer asked to see my license, sat down and included buses, making it legal to transport students on a bus!

This would never happen these days … thank goodness!

We now have thorough risk management practices in place and our use of excursion and incursion tools such as Consent2Go add rigour to risk assessments as well as simplifying processes for parents.

Another measure that we pay particular attention to is in relation to providing childsafe organisations.  The Royal Commission into the Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse uncovered appalling neglect that we never wish to have surface again.  Rigorous staff training is undertaken by all employees in Catholic schools and we ‘engineer’ child safety into facilities and procedures.

Furthermore, we do not shy away from acknowledging the failures of the past.  We support the disclosure of any sexual abuse of a child and have processes available for anyone who may have experienced institutional sexual abuse as a child.  Such people are likely to be eligible for support under the National Redress Scheme for survivors of institutional child sexual abuse.  The Sexual Assault Support Service (SASS) offers a free and confidential support service for people who are seeking information on, or wanting to apply to, the National Redress Scheme.  To find out more you can contact SASS on (03) 6231 0044, or go to the following website: https://www.sass.org.au/redress-scheme-support-service.

I wish all students a safe and restorative end-of-term break.  I will keep you in my prayers.

Worlds Greatest Shave

Last Friday was a much anticipated event on our school calendar, Founders Day. After a whole school assembly in the morning to kick things off, the students could not wait until after lunch for the festivities to begin. A BBQ, cold rock stall, log jump, sponge the teacher and fish the bottle were some of the activities set up to keep everyone entertained but we were all waiting with baited breath for 2pm to roll around. Our 12 amazing 'shavers' lined up for the most important haircut of their lives. The atmosphere was electrifying and our school community cheered loud and proud. Thank you once again to all of the people who have donated as we are currently sitting on a whopping $8789 and it isn't too late to donate.

Sports

Jack Menzies

Well done to Jack Menzies, who competed over 3 days at the Australian Junior Road Nationals in the time trial, 62km Road Race and Criteriums. He placed 13th in the Criterium Final after an excellent 4th place in the Criterium heat earlier in the day.

Achievements

Congratulations to Anthony Burbury, who was nominated for an Award and went to the Tasmanian Olympic Change Maker Forum on Tuesday.

Over 1000 teenagers from all over Australia had the opportunity to attend the Tasmanian Forum in Launceston, which was aimed at those who are continually striving to improve health and wellbeing in our communities. Anthony had the opportunity to meet a number of Olympians including Alyce Burnett (Rio 2016 Canoeist), Meghan Volker (Rio 2016 Rower), Becchara Palmer (London 2012 Volleyballer), Brooke Hanson (Silver & Gold at Athens 2004) and a number of coaches whose athletes attended the games.

He reports that he gained a number of things out of the day. He was given the opportunity to be inspired by the stories of athletes success, failures and hard work. He learnt about the management of teams and how to motivate people that may struggle, and discussed reliable methods to set and achieve goals. Thanks to the Organisers and our very own Mr Ryan and Mr O’Keeffe for giving him this opportunity to attend.
