Principal's News

Principal's Message 20 August 2020

Over the years I have refined a number of internal philosophies based on life experiences and observations.

‘Short Term Pain = Long Term Gain/Short Term Gain = Long Term Pain’ was a result of running the 'sweets gauntlet' with toddlers at supermarket checkouts.

‘You can be fair or simple ... but you can't be both’ was one I 'appropriated' from a key contributor to the development of Queensland's Tertiary Entrance Review in the 1980s.

Monday saw another gel. On experiencing the courteous and respectful conduct of our seniors as I unlocked their study room in the morning, I wondered if, in some small measure, what I experienced is a result of their being treated with respect from us over six years at the College (and not just the (up to) 18 years by parents). Thus was born a new philosophy:  'Quality takes time'.

Secondary education in Tasmania is at an exciting point of development. In 2016 the Year 9 to 12 Project was established to review education offerings and structure in these years. Since then, work has progressed to a point where, shortly, we will be able to provide feedback on what has been modelled. Having had a briefing on what the future might look like and it seems very promising.  UTAS has also asked for feedback on the School Recommendations Program that was introduced this year. Covid19 provided an impetus for change in 2020, but it seems highly likely that the model will continue into the future. For our Year 12 students, it is important to know that, even if you have accepted an early offer, you have the opportunity to review this once results are available.  Also, for those who may not have received their first choice, this can be changed if ATAR scores are of a sufficient standard.

Another initiative is the potential for students to complete short courses based upon the Australian Curriculum General Capabilities that adds flexibility and safety nets for achieving the TCE. As I said - exciting times.

I will keep you in my prayers

Vietnam Veterans Day

College Captains Claire Ellis and Oliver Bailey laying a wreath for Vietnam Veteran's Day on Tuesday 18th August.

We commemorate Vietnam Veterans' Day on the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966. We remember the sacrifices of those who died and say thank you to almost 60,000 Australians who served during the 10 years of our involvement in the Vietnam War.

Dancing at Assembly

Last week Year 8 and 9 dance students entertained us at assembly!

Mid Year Dance Exams

Students from physics, music and drama came to watch our SS dance students perform their mid year practical dance exams. Each dancer performed a self-choreographed solo. What a great way to share our talent with our peers!

Community

Girl Guides

Girl Guides are currently on the search for new youth members and volunteers on the North West Coast.

Girl Guides Tasmania aims to empower girls and young women to grow into confident, self-respecting, responsible community members. Women who become Leaders are supported through training and personal development. Many of our Leaders are active community members, through schools or other organisations, as they understand the importance of non-formal education spaces like Girl Guides.
